I have no self confidence because I have ADHD, what should I do?

I have had ADHD since I was around 6 years old and I have been starting to lose my self confidence because of it. I have the fear I will never be able to be independent. I also feel that I am so different from everybody else and that I will never have a girlfriend, because who would like a 15 year old boy with ADHD. Can anyone help?

I also have Asperger's Syndrome

Having ADHD isn't an easy thing to deal with, but it can be a tremendous strength too!! Bet you haven't heard that one! My son also has it, and was on medication through his school years. Now he is 25. He still suffers from it. I think I have it some days too, and it benefits me. I usually have 12 things going at once. However, I have learned control and make myself finish things I start. So, mostly, I can successfully get more done than most people. It means I have the energy to work circles around most people. I love that!

If this really concerns you, work on really making yourself complete things and work on focusing all of that energy. It isn't easy, but you have the potential to accomplish anything you set your mind to!!

Certainly having both ADHD and Asperger's Syndrome means that you have more challenges than most young people your age. This does not mean, however, that you can't work through them. It will just take more effort than for the average person. Also, there are many people who have ADHD these days. Look at Michael Phelps and what he has been able to accomplish! There are also benefits (more energy, creativity, intuitiveness, etc.) Instead of thinking you're different, realize that you are unique and special.

Also, know that all young people have to learn to how to communicate, develop self-confidence and get by in the world. The early teens are awkward years for everyone.

My suggestion to you would be to start working on personal development. Learn to be the best that 'you' can be. Don't worry about what others think. If you're developing yourself and your particular talents, people will naturally find you interesting and unique.

If you start by 'acting' as if you're confident and sure of yourself on your way to becoming it, others will see you that way.

All the best to you!

My oldest was diagnosed with ADD/ADHD at the end of third grade. He will be 14 in 2 weeks and I worry about him a lot.

If he were only ADHD I think I would worry less.

We had him tested by a Neuropsychologist who picked up the ADHD as a result of a APD(Audio Processing Disorder). Which means that what he hears may not get interpreted correctly. It effects his ability to remember things especially verbal instructions, keep organized, sequencing, problem solving. He frequently feels so overwhelmed he just stops doing all his homework.

ADHD alone should not keep you from having friends or a girl friend. A "typical" teen with ADHD should be the life of the party. I suspect you are not the "typical" ADHD teen and need better diagnosis so you can live up to your IQ (which is no doubt high)
