What is adhd with autism or autistic characteristics?

my son was diagnosed with autism (aspergers syndrome) at 6 years old. he is now 9. i took him to one of the best psychologist in my city and he told me that my son was adhd with autistic characteristics and that my son is basically a (late bloomer) but that he doesnt have autism. that my son is socialable. he gave my son a focus test. and said that my son is very smart his focus is bad. i just tryin to understand how can u be adhd with autistic characteristics. i thought that autistic characteristics made him autistic. i've always wonder why was my son so hyper...every morning he wakes up he jumps out of his bed and runs up and down the hall stimming... so right now i dont know what to think. i'm confused about the whole thing.

I have a son with autistic features dx PDD.NOS, when he was younger he was dx autistic. The position on the spectrum changes over time, usually gets better. Autistic features means that he no longer meets criteria for asperger's or autism so this means he is functioning higher than he was.

My son also has an ADD.NOS dx. I agree with justmeinthis world, I am not certain my son's attention issues are the result of ADD, it can be sensory integration, or the PDD itself causing the ADD

Autism is extremely difficult to diagnose. One doctor might believe he is autistic and another would believe he has autistic tendencies. In other words, he exhibits some behaviors of autism, without actually having it.

It doesn't matter what you call it. Is this doctor effectively treating the disorder. Is your son being successful and is he progressing at an acceptable rate? Many children have stemming tendencies. It is how we deal with those tendencies that matter. I would suggest you do some research on autism. Find out what kind of support is near you for autistic families. I would also check out sensitivities to foods. Many hyperactive children focus better when their diet is controlled. Sensitivities to cheese, gluten, food dyes, etc. can cause a lot of problems for children.
Exhaust all resources to support your child. He can be a succesful child.

what makes this guy the best?

does he specialize in autism? if not I wouldn't trusts his judgement.

it is more likely that the lack of attention is being caused by the aspergers--and he doens't have ADHD in addition to it

have you talked to an OT (occupational therpaist) about sensory iintegration..many child on teh spectrum act hyper beauce they are not processing sensory input correctly

It might be a good ides for you to visit autism speaks or other autism sites there are great definitions for autism as well as information for parents regarding diagnoses as well as assessments.
As a parent its always a good idea to get a second opinion, your son is he attends pub school should be able to get an assessment for free at school, let them knwo in writing your concerns, regarding his hyoersactivity and they should have his assessed.

You think this is hard, its much harder to diagnosed a girl with ADHD and AS. cause its hard to see in girls, but boys are easier to diagnose.
