ADHD vs. Bad study Habits?

Do you believe in the condition of ADHD or bad study habits that lead a person to be diagnosed with ADHD?

My feeling is that too often people want to stick a diagnostic tag on someone when they have difficulty with anything.

If enough different difficulties are in a single person, they will find a list that those difficulties or traits fall into and give their behaviors one title. Is it ADHD, or are some people just born to be more active? If we all have a purpose in life, are all people the same? No. Just because my legs wiggle a lot and hurt at night it doesn't mean I have restless leg syndrome, although that's what the doctor said. Did he ever ask me how active I have always been, and now I have a sit down job? My answer was to simply start walking more, now I don't have "Restless Leg Syndrome" and my legs are fine. I was just born with a higher metabolism and need to be more active.

It's basically the same with a lot of diagnosis, although ADHD does have a lot of testing to determine if it is ADHD, one reason because the meds can be addictive depending on what you are prescribed.

My unprofessional diagnosis based on little to no information is, just figure you need to form better habits for studying. If you can't pay attention, it might simply be because it's boring or you need to find a better time and place to study. Maybe right after class, or after you have had your fun for the day or don't drink coffee beforehand.

There can be a lot of things affecting your ability and desire to study that the doctor will never know or have time to ask.

It's really good that you take a look at everything in your life that can be affecting this before accepting any tag,

Guess what. It's not just habbit, but a neurological disorder...here comes my long explanation.
ADHD is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. It is characterized by hyperactivity, impulsiveness and easy distration, and lack of executive function. What is executive function? Executive function is a big word for being organized and focused. People with ADD/ADHD have something missing (too much or too little of some chemical) in their brains that would normally help them organize and be focused. So this causes them to be disorganized and impulsive, easily distracted. A recipe for bad study habits. So unless they learn and devote a lot of energy to learning how to be organized, they're going to be very scattered. This is a factually and experience based answer. In other words, you're hardwired wrong, and it makes you have bad study habits, which leads to the diagnosis. It's not because people with this are wimps or don't try hard enough--it's a neurological thing.

Both. I have certainly seen children with true ADHD. But, more often, I see children with parents who have no idea how to raise their children. In America, we want a quick solution to a not so easy problem. What's easier than eating a pill? I think ADHD is waaaaaay over-diagnosed. If a child isn't paying attention, the first thing that's suspected is ADHD. Very few people look at the child's situation at home, their diet or other b9iological explanations for ADHD (such as petit mal seizures). And many times, much to my dismay, I see parents pushed into medicating their children by teachers and school systems. A teacher may not be able to handle a child who is a little higher-energy than the rest of the kids, or one who is a little more defiant. Thinking they can make a diagnosis of ADHD, they talk to the parents and convince them that their child is somehow "different" from the other kids. And the parent believe the teacher because she's worked with hundreds of kids, so she would know when something was different. I do, however, think it's more than just "bad study habits" I think it's a combination of things.
All that being said, I did a research paper on ADHD. In one of the books I used for research there was a diagnostic tool used to identify ADHD. It was basically a questionnaire. I had friends and family members take the questionnaire, and 9 out of 10 of them would have been diagnosed with ADHD. And these are perfectly normally functioning people.

If you truly knew someone with ADHD, you would know it is more than just bad study habits.

I laughed at the thought of ADHD in the past...then I had my son. It was obvious from the time he was just a baby that there was something there. I put off getting it diagnosed intil he was 12. I should have done it sooner. Since on medication, his life has become much more managable for him. He is 13.
