Will my dr. diagnose adhd? |
I have decided to be checked for adhd I am 26 but all of my life I have had many of the symptoms and they seem to be getting worse. So I have a appt in 3 days but it is with my family practice dr. can they even help or will I have to go to a psychiatrist? Yes, your family doctor can diagnose ADHD, but some family doctors prefer to refer you to a specialist if they dont have a lot of experience and understanding in the feild. So it will really depend on the individual doctor. But all in all it is best to go to your doctor, because even if they are one of the ones that chooses not to diagnose they will have a very good knowledge of experts in the area and will be able to refer you to one. Also it is very important to have your family doctor involved for future monitoring of your medication if you choose to use medication. He may be able to help you and prescribe you something for general anxiety but family doctors really don't have the expertise to dispense stimulants/ssri's for anxiety. Usually one is examined by a Phd doctor who performs a series of tests (TOVA, questionnaires, etc) and then will give the test results to your psychiatrist of choice or of recommendation or just examined by the psychiatrist themself. Also, sometimes insurance companies require you to see a family physician first before they will cover ADHD testing with a psychiatrist. 26 is not the right age for ADHD. It is a Mental disorder of children which is spontaneously resolved before the age of 16 to 18. 80% ADHD child cured by nature. ADHD carries the name of symptoms that is Attention Deficit with Hyperactive Disorder. Are you Hyperactive then it is good because you are energetic. Are you suffering from attention deficit鈥?then you can consult a Psychologist who can diagnose the cause for attention deficit and can refer the right doctor (Psychiatrist or General Physician). If your doctor diagnoses you with ADHD, he may also prescribe medication to help alleviate some of your symptoms. You do not have to be referred to another doctor. However, it will be up to your personal doctor to make that decision. The doctor can help, at least with initial testing, and can then refer you to a doctor who is more specialized- therapist, psychiatrist, councillor etc. You will end up at a psychiatrist anyways. Might as well skip the family doc. A family doc cannot make a diagnosis of ADD/ADHD I dont know about family doctors my psychiatrist diagnosed me with add but whats it gonna hurt if you goto the family doctor if he doesnt know go toa psychiatrist I used to work and am good friends with my daughters pedi. I watch her children during the summer, one of whom have ADHD, the other ADD. |
