Will my dr. diagnose adhd?

I have decided to be checked for adhd I am 26 but all of my life I have had many of the symptoms and they seem to be getting worse. So I have a appt in 3 days but it is with my family practice dr. can they even help or will I have to go to a psychiatrist?

Yes, your family doctor can diagnose ADHD, but some family doctors prefer to refer you to a specialist if they dont have a lot of experience and understanding in the feild. So it will really depend on the individual doctor. But all in all it is best to go to your doctor, because even if they are one of the ones that chooses not to diagnose they will have a very good knowledge of experts in the area and will be able to refer you to one. Also it is very important to have your family doctor involved for future monitoring of your medication if you choose to use medication.

ADHD can often get worse in Adult women than it was before because it is effected by female hormones. If you do have ADHD you will find it is effected by your menstrual cylce. The worst problems tend to occur just before you get your period.

ADHD is not a childhood disorder, it is a lifelong condition. You are born with this condition and only a very small number of ADHD sufferers will grow out of the disorder. 80% will continue to suffer from ADHD right through their adult years and a quarter of those will find their symptoms get more serious.

Being hyperactive is good in many ways. You have high energy levels and dont get tired easily. But in other ways it can be a very disabling condition. Being incapable of sitting still when you need to can affect you ability to get and hold down a job and even enjoy leisure activities. Also hyperactivity is only 1 symptom of ADHD, the most disabling symptom for adults is poor impulse cntrol and an inability to control your behavior. This can lead to serious problems with employment, relationships, friendships and many other situations.

He may be able to help you and prescribe you something for general anxiety but family doctors really don't have the expertise to dispense stimulants/ssri's for anxiety. Usually one is examined by a Phd doctor who performs a series of tests (TOVA, questionnaires, etc) and then will give the test results to your psychiatrist of choice or of recommendation or just examined by the psychiatrist themself. Also, sometimes insurance companies require you to see a family physician first before they will cover ADHD testing with a psychiatrist.

26 is not the right age for ADHD. It is a Mental disorder of children which is spontaneously resolved before the age of 16 to 18. 80% ADHD child cured by nature. ADHD carries the name of symptoms that is Attention Deficit with Hyperactive Disorder. Are you Hyperactive then it is good because you are energetic. Are you suffering from attention deficit鈥?then you can consult a Psychologist who can diagnose the cause for attention deficit and can refer the right doctor (Psychiatrist or General Physician).

If your doctor diagnoses you with ADHD, he may also prescribe medication to help alleviate some of your symptoms. You do not have to be referred to another doctor. However, it will be up to your personal doctor to make that decision.

The doctor can help, at least with initial testing, and can then refer you to a doctor who is more specialized- therapist, psychiatrist, councillor etc.

You will end up at a psychiatrist anyways. Might as well skip the family doc. A family doc cannot make a diagnosis of ADD/ADHD

I dont know about family doctors my psychiatrist diagnosed me with add but whats it gonna hurt if you goto the family doctor if he doesnt know go toa psychiatrist

I used to work and am good friends with my daughters pedi. I watch her children during the summer, one of whom have ADHD, the other ADD.
ADHD is more common in males although females often have this. To what was explained to me and what I saw and recognized, the child who had ADHD was hyper, went to bed late, woke up early, etc. and in the ADD child, it was more of a daydream, had trouble focusing and not paying attention.
My daughter, now 7, are showing signs of ADD. While she is very smart, and makes straight A's, the teachers all say she is very busy, gets distracted easily, and does not pay attention.
My doc friend says that it is like there is so much stimulation, information etc. racing through her mind that it is hard for her to focus on one thing and pay attention.
While my pediatrician friend chose to put her children on meds, (and i do see a huge difference, especially for the child with ADHD), I am trying something, before I go the medication route.
Someone suggested I cut out red dye in her diet.
I didnt really think that this would do much, and thought it was an old wives tale, but teachers who were pro medicine are seeing a difference.
I have only tried this with my daughter for 3 months but it seems to be doing a little bit of good.I was told to cut out all foods that say red dye # whatever, even watch out for pink, some blues and purple. (They mix blue and red to get purple.) Another thing to try to ween off of is Gluten products.
My child is still allowed to have natural red, such as strawberry, cherry, etc.
Should you choose to go the meds route, my childs pedi said that once she puts the children on meds, when they get to about college age, about 50% are able to stay off while the other 50% recognize that they need it and request it.

I know that you will prob. have to see a specialist or psychiatrist to get medication prescribed, and they may require you to get a referral from your family doctor to even see you. However your family doctor may be able to help answer questions and discuss different ways of controlling your symptoms. My pediatrician friend runs a few tests (Q&A etc.) but she sends them to another doctor for the final analysis.

Good luck and I hope this was a little helpful @^_^@
