My 10 year old son has all the symtoms of ADHD HELP!!?

can any body suggest a way forward with this i am at my wits end please help any advice cures, alternative cures, medication, therapy,

You should really take him to the Doctor and get him a referral to a professional. You need some proper support as you say you are at your wits end which suggests you can't do this alone.

Hi, the first step is to get a diagnosis. Having all the symptoms does not mean he has ADHD, as was said before most 10 year old boys in fact have all the syptoms but only a very small percentage have actual ADHD, this is a complicated diagnosis which requires a number of tests before you can say for sure.

What to do is visit your local doctor and explain the probelms and say you are concerned he may have ADHD. If your doctor is knowledgable in the area he/she can do the diagnosis themselves. More often they will refer you to a specialist for a diagnosis. The diagnosis if done properly will take at least a few visits and will require some tests, it can't be done in one 15 minute consulation. If it is look for a second opinion to know for sure.

It may be that he is siffering from a diffierent problem. Many other childhood problems look identical to ADHD but need very different treatment so it is important to know for sure. Also in order for you to get any help or support for him you will require a proper diagnosis.

Once you have had your child diagnosed with ADHD there will be many things to do.

1. Educate yourself. You need to find out as much as you can about ADHD. the better you understand the disorder the better you will be at dealing with it. The best places to go for information are books from the book store or library and your childs doctor. the worst place is the internet as anyone can post anything and much of the information out there is controversial and innacurate.

2. Get support. Join a support group in your local area or one online. To takle an ADHD child on your own is an insurmountable task, and you wont get much help or support from parents of regular kids. Having someone to talk to and swap stories and idea's with can be a life saver.

3. Consider medication. All parents of ADHD kids will have to make a desicion whether or not to place their child on medication. Remember that ADHD is a medical condition and requires medical treatement for your child to have quality of life her deserves. Learn as much as you can about the medicatiosn your son will take and dont hessitate to ask a million questions of your doctor.

4. Diet. many foods make ADHD much worse and a good diet can make the difference between a manageble ADHD child and an uncontrollable one. Remove all candy and soda's and the like from your child diet and be careful to avoid all foods with colors (even natural colors which can be worse than artificial ones) flavours, preservatives, flavour enhancers and additives. Even many healthy foods are detrimantal to ADHD so consider visiting a dietician.

The ADHD brai also works best with a high protien and low carbohydrate diet.

5. Exersize, physcial activity helps the ADHD brain a great deal. ADHDer's need to do at least 30 minutes of very high level exersize everyday and you will see a huge improvement in their behavior. Consider sports like gymnastics, swimming and martial arts.

6. Routine. Set up a firm and clear routine in your house. Decide on house rules and make the rules and consequence clear, post them on the walls. Make routines to help get things done, for example TV time is not until after homework is done and so on. ADHD kids function much better with clear structure.

7. Positive reinforcement. Find ways to encourage and reward good behaviour. ADHD kids need immediate, frequent small rewards. Use praise as often as possible. Set up a points chart and reward points for all good behaviours. All the points to be exchanged for rewards. EG 10 points is a special dessert, 50 points is a trip to the movies and so on. Try to give a lot of attention and focus to good behaviour.

8. Discipline. Have a firm discipline program in place. Kids with ADHD need discipline that is a lot stricter than regular kids. Post a list of the house rules and what will happen if they are broken. be firm and stick to consequences. Never ignore or allow your child to get away with bad behaviour because he will have enough trouble associating it with consequences, if there are no consequences it becomes even harder. Use immediate negative consequences.

The best negative consequence for ADHD is time out. Place him for 5 minutes on a boring chair or in a boring corner. Don't use his bedroom. ADHD kids cant focus as long as a normal kid so 5 minutes for a 10 year old is really all they can handle. Don't take away his hard erned rewards for bad behavior, keep the rewards and punishments totally seperate.

First of all prozac and rattlin are very unhealthy with terrible side effects regardless of what your doctor might say. and most ten year old boys have all the symptoms of ADHD simply because they are 10 year old boys per haps you should read a book by Micheal and Debbie Pearl "To Train up a child"It is great I have seen some very outragous boys change there behavior with out the use of drugs I would suggest unconditional consistant loving disipline

Hello,

If your son is really suffering from ADHD, you need to contact a physician at the earliest. I hereby want to ensure that many homeopathic physicians are handling ADHD effectively and without inflicting any side effects on the child.

Also, there are some behaviour therapies that can help. You can get an online counseling at http://www.DrShreya.com and also can get online homeopathic prescription or medicines.

I was in the same boat as you with my son, and the methods in this article really helped turn him around. He's like a totally different kid now!
