ADHD SURPRISE ! Where can I turn for help ?

While researching adhd to see if this could be part of my boyfriends sons learning problems,I discovered the adult symptoms fit me perfectly ! I am unemployed and have no insurance. I also have back problems and trouble with my hands. What resources are out there for help ?

Hi apacheswoman -

You are not alone!! And I mean that in a very friendly way. A lot of adults tend to have this similar experience when helping a child. It wasn't too long ago that ADHD was considered a "childhood condition." We just didn't think of adults...

Here's what I can suggest up front. I absolutely want to encourage you to somehow find a professional (specializing in ADHD) with whom you can talk to about what you found... The specific behaviors that match the adults symptoms of ADHD.

I mention this because ADHD can look like so many different things - other learning disabilities, medical conditions, psychological stressors, etc... It's just something to consider! I want you to be informed so you can get the best possible support.

In terms of resources... I would encourage to grab a few books from the library (if you like to read)... It's always best to identify one or two trusted sources who you can identify with and follow them. There are a lot of different opinions about ADHD and what is needed to successfully manage symptoms.

A few of the more reliable names that come to mind:

Ned Hallowell - Driven to Distraction
Sari Solden - (A few books for women with ADHD)
John Ratey (Spark, co-author of Driven to Distraction)

Last but not least, I would recommend checking out some of the advocacy groups like www.add.org. WebMD and other health sites have solid information - but I will caution you about it because it's very much from the medical perspective...the idea that ADHD is a disease and needs to be treated.

Hope that is a start that will help.

Feel free to contact me if I can provide additional support.
