Is it healthy for a 14 and 15 year old (adhd) boy to play xbox 360 for more than 2 hours a day on school night?

Is it healthy for a 14 and 15 year old (adhd) boy to play xbox 360 for more than 2 hours a day on school night?

Hi luckystar -

Let me see what I can do to help with this. A lot of parents are concerned about video games and children, especially when a child has ADHD (because they seem to be able to focus on games forever).

I wouldn't look at this as "healthy" or unhealthy. And I would also suggest thinking about age being separate from ADHD. In other words, I want to consider:

1. Is it normal for a 14 or 15 year old boy to play....?
2. Does ADHD make it more of a concern?

The most direct answer I can give you is - Does his playing video games create problems in life?

Is he getting his work done? Getting a good night's sleep? Doing well (or good enough) in school?

I don't know if you are asking about the alleged impacts of video games on behavior - but that is entirely another issue. I for one played a LOT of video games as a child and young adult in college... Did I get involved with them? Yes Did I play a lot? Yes Did I get my work done? Yes Did it make me more violent? No

I think a lot of people get concerned about video games and ADHD, because these kids tend to be able to focus forever... And that's where ADHD is misunderstood. ADHD is not about "inattention" much to popular belief. Instead, it's about selective attention or variable attention. Therefore, these kids / teens will be more interested and more capable to focus on things that they are interested in or love (video games).

As long as the video games are not impacting other areas of life...I would say it is okay. Just my $0.02

Not really, kids these days lead a pretty sedentry lifestyle. Very few get enough exersize and activity. 2 hours in front of the Xbox wont help. Even if the kids aren't overweight it isnt good for them.

Yes it is fine it will help them lose there ADHD and they will get less Hyper and it gives them an ex cape from school.
