Can you treat Adult ADHD without medication? How long do people use medication, and do they become dependent?

Can you treat Adult ADHD without medication? How long do people use medication, and do they become dependent?

Whether or not you can treat Adult ADHD with medication is a very individual thing. generally it depends how severe your case is. If you have mild ADHD then yes, most adults with mild ADHD go without medication and have enough of their own stratedgies in place to control their condition. If you have severe ADHD then no, generally you will need medication in order to get and hold a job and function effectively in society. Most people are somewhere in between these two extremes and have to make the desicion based on their own loves.

People who use medication generally do so for their entire lives, they do not become dependant. ADHD medications are prescribed in very small doses which are not addictive. People get addicted to drugs because it takes them away from reality and gives them a high. ADHD drugs bring ADHDer's back to reality and calm them down. I myself have been on Ritalin for 15 years and am not addicted. I love not having to take it if I can avoid it, but I have to take it in order not to be fired from work.

ADHD is not a made up disorder. In the year 2009 pretty much all medical and scientific professionals agree that ADHD is a true disorder. Controversy exists only in the media because controversy sells. And among those who have nothing to do with the disorder.

It has been proven for over two decades that this disorder does exist as the obvious brain differences have been seen on brain scans, on a daily basis. In many countries (mine included) these brain scans are used to diagnose ADHD. This is not done in the united states as they do not have a cetrelised health care system paid for by the governement so these test would be extremely expensive to the consumer.

The drugs used for ADHD are addictive to the general public because they have a different effect on them. They are not addictive to people with ADHD and not addictive in the low doses that are given for ADHD.

Hocfecit, that is a load of SHIIIIT. Why don't YOU try having ADD or ADHD? Because I actually HAVE ADD, and it IS real, and it SUCKS.

I've been using Vyvanse since the end of August. I'm not dependent, but I have built up a tolerance. Which wasn't supposed to be possible, but that's basically the common theme in my life: things going wrong that were never supposed to. If past lives are real, then I'd bet a lot of money that I either engineered or was a passenger on the Titanic. But I'm getting off topic...yeah, try and tell me ADD isn't real. Anyways, yeah, if you don't take it as prescribed, then there's a good chance you will become dependent. It's a trial-and-error process to find the right medication for you, very hit-or-miss, and you might miss a couple times before you finally find what works. In the end, though, I feel it's definitely worth it if you're in a situation where you need to devote a lot of concentration daily.

AD HD and ADD are made up diagnosis from the 50's where teachers asked psychiatrists to diagnose unruly children. They wanted to see the children drugged. This has been accomplished. This is proven fact. It is scientifically proven there is no such disease. It has also been testified against in congress. Check out ablechild.org and breggin.com The drugs are extremely addictive, (Ritalin and Aderal) they belong to the same drug catagory as cocaine and methamphytemine. No doctor will tell you that. There is a great movement to ban these drugs and the wholesale drugging of our children who are being diagnosed at 18 months of age.
I urge you not to take the drugs. There are alternatives that work.
