How do I convince my mom to get me ADHD meds?

Ok so I'm 14 and I believe i have ADHD. I researched it, and i seem to have all the symptoms. Plus a friend of mines who has it told me I have it. or whatever. I keep trying to convince my mom to take me to the doctors so i can find out for sure and stuff. So I'm just looking for suggestions on how i can convince my mom to take me to the doctors and possible get my medication if i do indeed have ADHD.

MOST people/children, etc. don't have ADHD - they have SEVERE nutritional deficiencies caused by eating so much sugar, etc., and red dye #40 (found in many foods - Kool-Aids, etc.). Most people, if they develop proper eating habits, including getting the proper amounts of Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids, protein, fresh, raw vegetables and fruits, either have the problem eliminated or reduced dramatically. And, it doesn't even involve taking "kiddie crack" - which is what Ritalin is. Do some research on it.

I felt the same way when I discovered that I have OCD. You have to tell your mom this isn't an act. You really believe you have ADHD and you don't want to live with it anymore. You need to see a psychiatrist.

Don't beg her. Let her know in a very heartfelt discussion that it's not an act, you really do feel like you have ADHD.

You're fourteen, so you ARE allowed to go see the doctor yourself, however, you need your mother's permission to get the RESULTS.
Go see your family doctor and get him/her to send the results to your mum.

Say you'd like to see a psychiatrist, not that you want pills for ADHD.

Hi Ashley -

Here's the thing about ADHD. It really does exist - whether people will admit it or not. How you choose to see it and manage is critical. It's a rather complex condition that can be mimicked by so many other problems, like poor diet, anxiety, depression, stress... As a matter of fact, ADHD is rather complicated to distinguish from all these other conditions.

I wanted to share that with you because researching ADHD and having all the symptoms can be rather misleading... It's easy for all of us to "appear to have ADHD some of the time." You definitely want to see a Dr. or specialist to explore it further. I really applaud you for recognizing that. Just make sure you see a specialist who really understands ADHD, and not just any old Dr. who will just prescribe you medication. That's not the right way to do it...especially if you don't have ADHD.

Now, about your specific question... I would just explain to your Mom that you are wondering about <some specific behaviors / concerns>. I wouldn't just come out and say "I think I have ADHD..." It's too easy for anyone to say "Oh, no you don't. Don't be silly." But if you present her (or anyone else) with real "symptoms" or concerns, they'll be more likely to listen and hear you.

Have you thought about going to see the school nurse or psychologist for information? Or maybe a guidance counselor?

Oh yea, I almost forgot... You don't necessarily need medication just because you have ADHD. It all depends on how it affects you. ;-)

Hope this information helps. Good luck.
