My 9 yr old son has ADHD and has a problem with stealing, how can we stop this?

I am not sure what to do for the consequences anymore. I have taken away privileges, made him write papers, let him meet with a police officer. If it is a situation with a store, he has to go apologize and pay for the item out of his money. Plus we then give the item to a child who needs a toy. He is impulsive by nature of the ADHD, and we are running out of things to do that will mean anything to him...as far as consequences for his impulsiveness. Help!

It sounds like you have tried a lot of different ways to work with this situation. You have used your head, and that is good. ADHD children do try to get attention, and if they can't get it in a way that works for them, they will use anything they can. One thing that ADHD kids get too little of is praise. They are so often doing things that get negative notice, they may forget what they do right. You might try to give him recognition for the things he does well. There may not be that many, but saying, "I like the way you finished ALL of your paper (or assignment)" might be a start. Thank you for helping with clearing the table - it helps a lot and I appreciate it. You worked on (??) for 10 minutes longer than you usually do! Good job. Etc., etc. Get creative and look for ways to compliment him, but they need to be genuine. When he is misbehaving, and especially if it is in regards to being loud, yelling at you, etc., allow him time in his room to cool off. If he refuses to go by his own accord, GENTLY escort him there. If he slams the door, yells, says things you really did not want to hear, etc., do not say anything about it. Wait until you and he have calmed down. Then whey you know he is cooler, you can go and CALMLY talk to him to decide a better way to have handled the situation. Don't berate him, as this only makes the whole thing worse. Just find ways that could help the situation. If you did something you should not have, then admit it, so he sees what adults should do - which he will be one day. What about getting a pet, dog, cat, etc.? ADHD children often find the company of something that does not judge them beneficial. Of course there can be things involved with this such as care, but the presence of an animal might be beneficial. Or perhaps he could volunteer (along with you if you choose) at a local shelter or humane organization. Does he like horses? Riding lessons. Sports? Make SURE he is involved with something he loves to do, so he can see that he has something he can be good at, and something to look forward to in life. Try to be calm with your son, as much as you can. Look up the following book: "Allergies and the Hyperactive Child", by Dr. Doris Rapp. You can find it at used online booksites. Cheap and very helpful. Eliminate all peanut products, including things cooked in peanut oil. Have you asked him why he is doing this? Lots of love.

take him to a store one day let him get something he really wants then have a friend of yours he does not know rob you and take his new toy. talk to him about it and tell him if he does not steal for a week you will replace the toy. tough love but better you then a correction officer

I see what you are sayin. I babysit a kid who has the same problem. His mother holds his hand when they go shopping. She also puts a leash lookin thing on him. But ever since then hes been stayin out of trouble. A good idea would be to make him wear pants with no pockets. If he wears less pockets he will have fewer places to hide stuff. GOOD LUCk!

I was in the same boat as you, and the methods in this article really helped turn him around. He's like a totally different kid now!

He may need to see a psychologist or psychiatrist. Nothing taboo with that but it could help make him more aware of certain behaviors. I agree with the person above who said more praise etc. Good luck.

i know i sound crazy but start rewarding him. say good job or say the camera is watching you every where you go say their r military waiting to attack who ever stills from the store

Talk to a counsler at his school. They will know your child better and help you find other sources to hopefully help with his problem. Good luck!

attach a camera to him and theaten to cut his hands off

put him over your knee.
spanking works.
