Is there any research, that i can find and read on the internet, about ADHD being a genetic disorder?

i have looked and found that it is hereditary but i haven't found out if it is a genetic disorder.

i know its genetic, but is it a genetic disorder that has only a chance of happening. an example of a genetic disorder is down's syndrome. a genetic disorder means it is something wrong with your chromosomes, with one or more of your chromosome pairs.

Hi nemokid1220 -

There is no definitive answer right now. There are plenty of research studies suggesting the cause of ADHD, but science and the medical community still don't know.

About as direct as I can get is that yes, ADHD is genetic is passed down from generation to generation. But like anything else involving heredity and genetics, there is no way to predict who will get ADHD or not.

Here's what we know - Genetics contributes 77% to whether or not someone will get ADHD passed down. We don't know yet what that 23% "other" is...

To go one step further, there is genetic testing being conducted to identify which genes are associated with ADHD -- but there is still no way to know for sure who will have ADHD.

Hope this helps.

Look up research by doing a search on Jill St. James. Read her studies and findings. I have done research and emailed with her and she knows. She is located here in Arkansas at the children's hospital. They HAVE found the gene that causes it and they can test newborns to see if they are prone. Remember though, we carry genes for a lot of things, but you have to have the proper triggers to set it off. Just because the gene is there, does not mean that it is actively present.

If it's hereditary, that means it is genetic. Where do your genes come from? You inHERIT them.

EDIT: Yes, it only has a chance of happening. You must have two dominant genes for it (you could also get recessive genes, two or one) to get it, just like other genetic traits, like blue eyes or whatever. Thanks for the lesson. : )
