ADHD child, what behavior/focus tactics do you use? |
My son is 10 and has been on medication for adhd for years. I don't want him medicated. I would like for him to learn some self control. Just wondering what type of focusing tactics has worked for others. I realize he may need to continue with medicine. But, he needs to learn some self control as well. hahaha, thanks for the advice. My child is very well behaved. it is focusing that is the problem. When your brain spins 100 miles an hour with more thoughts than your puny minds could comprehend in one day... it makes it very hard to concentrate on any one thing for long. Some of my kids as well as many that I work with now or have in the past have been labeled with ADHD. I am very resistant to the idea of using medications to manage them so I've always tried other methods to bring about calmer and more focused behavior. One simple strategy that works for me is to provide lots of extremely active play in each day. When they can burn off surplus energy they find it much easier to settle and focus. For my boys the activity needs to be fairly intense and sometimes they need to get at something like that a few times in one day for it to tame their relentless energy and impulsiveness. I too used to think that ADHD was a made-up condition until my children were both diagnosed after YEARS of tantrums, bad grades, etc. We tried every type of behavior modification until we finally gave in and tried the meds. We are so sorry we waited! Their ability to focus and behave has improved immensely. We are even able to travel - something we could never do with them before. I was in the same boat with my son, and the natural behavioral methods found in this article really helped him - with no meds. Now his focus is remarkable,he gets straight A's, and my family has some peace and quiet. He's like a different kid, it's truly amazing! vagabond...you are an idiot!!! I have 3 children with a.d.h.d.,one also has o.d.d. I assume you are not even a parent??? If when you get home and your child isn't in the fetal position in the corner then you have failed as a parent. |
