Crystal meth for ADHD?

I was researching methamphetamines, and did you know the medication doctors prescribe for ADHD is the same thing as crystal meth? I have always been strongly against medicating children for ADHD believing that all children have different degrees of this invisible illness due to their immature brains, and delays in brain development. Now that I am learning a little more about methamphetimines I am even more strongly against medicating children for "ADHD". The long term effects of meth, and the withdrawal effects are horrible! My son is extremely hyperactive and would most definitely be diagnosed with ADHD if I started complaining to a few doctors about it. How dare they prescribe my son something so dangerous. I need to research more, but I warn anyone in giving their child any type of methamphetamine!

The dextrorotatory (S-isomer) dextromethamphetamine can be prescribed to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, though unmethylated amphetamine is more commonly prescribed.
Wikipedia for methamphetimines

Nervousness and insomnia are the most common adverse reactions but are usually controlled by reducing dosage and omitting the drug in the afternoon or evening. Other reactions include hypersensitivity (including skin rash, urticaria, fever, arthralgia, exfoliative dermatitis, erythema multiforme with histopathological findings of necrotizing vasculitis, and thrombocytopenic purpura); anorexia; nausea; dizziness; palpitations; headache; dyskinesia; drowsiness; blood pressure and pulse changes, both up and down; tachycardia; angina; cardiac arrhythmia; abdominal pain; weight loss during prolonged therapy. There have been rare reports of Tourette's syndrome. Toxic psychosis has been reported.

In children, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, weight loss during prolonged the

Why do you think that so many meth heads like the drug!!! Of course it's not going to do the same for a child who has ADHD, it will do the opposite. If you don't need the drug or don't have ADHD it will be just like it was if you had smoked some meth.

are you sure your son is just ACTIVE and being a "kid"? My daughter is very active and goes & goes & goes, but she doesn't have ADHD. I also think way too many parents want to say their child has ADHD or the teachers want to say it too, just to medicate them instead of getting them to listen and do what's expected of them.

Methylphenidate has been investigated as a chemical replacement for the treatment of cocaine dependence.

Early research began in 2007-08 in some countries on the effectiveness of methylphenidate as a substition agent in refractory cases of cocaine dependence; the fact that it can satisfy cravings for cocaine in a way which is subjectively and pharmacologically equivalent but longer-lasting as well as easier on the body and somewhat safer and easier to manage has long been part of the 'street lore' associated with stimulants in many parts of the world in much the same way that other substitutionmittel drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine, butorphanol, extended-release oral morphine, dihydrocodeine, and clonidine were amongst opioid users in various times over the past century.

It is commonly asked why a stimulant should be used to treat hyperactivity, which seems paradoxical. However, CTs of ADHD brains show decreased activity in the brain centers critical to concentration and goal-directed activities.[citation needed] Treatment with methylphenidate (etc.) results in increased activity in those regions, in ADHD patients, and in healthy controls as well. Thus the model explanation is that hyperactive children (and adults) have underactive concentration centers, and stimulating them reduces hyperactivity. Thus the stimulants do not work paradoxically. They stimulate portions of the brain that are underactive by increasing dopamine and norepinephrine in the striatum and prefontal cortex.

You need to do some more research, like not on wikipedia (sorry to be so frank). Crystal meth and the compound in some adhd medication are by no means the same thing.

2 drugs can be in the same family and have very different effects on the body.

This is a basic fact of organic chemistry, the effect a compound has on the body is dependant on its shape, small changes to a compound completely change the way it effects the body.

Ibuprofen and penicillin are two examples, one form has a medicinal use but other forms have no effect.

That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard...ADHD medication (of which there are SEVERAL different types, not just one...but if you had actually researched the topic before forming an opinion about it, you would know already), isn't the same as methamphetamine. Yes, some do contain and AMPHETAMINE, but anyone with a basic understanding of chemical compounds would realize that they are not the same. I was on adderall for years. I quit suddenly all the time (I didn't take it on the weekends or during the summers), and guess what? No withdrawal effects at all! And I wasn't diagnosed until I was nineteen years old, so where does that put your "immature brains" theory? If you want to be a doctor, go back to school.

I don't buy ADHD in 90% of cases. It is a RARE and serious condition that is over diagnosed. Lots of parents give the drug in lieu of exercising their child.
When I was a kid - we were out the door after breakfast - running, biking, swimming - ALL DAY! We had tons of energy. Now, kids go for a two hour "play date" or go to the park for an hour - and parents wonder why their kids are bouncing off the wall!

Ritalin - almost as effective as exercise!

I have ADHD. I take methylphenidate (ritalin) for it. I have NEVER heard of any MD treating ADHD with methamphetamine. The literature on the subject not only does not recommend it, it is condemned. I believe you are getting bad information from a bad source. Try consulting with a neurologist.

Doctor want to prescribe anything these days and i remember a doctor asking me if i would like 'some for Thomas' like it was a sweet, i said 'No thanks' i said No Thanks because Thomas has Autism not ADHD seems doctors don't know the difference

Ritalin is not the same as Meth, sorry but it is not.

Why the thumbs down?? Maybe you people need to further your research!!! It is obvious you have a computer, use it!
