Melatonin for child with ADHD?

A friend of mine has a child with ADHD & FTT (Failure to thrive) and is unable to get any doctor to prescribe medication for this because weight loss is a side effect to most ADHD meds.

Her son's neurologist told her to try giving the child melatonin to help him with sleeping (only sleeps 2 hours a night) and 1/2 of the regular dosage during the day to help mellow him out.

What exactly is the conventional use for melatonin and is this effective?

My pediatrician recommended Melatonin because my son didn't sleep well, either.

Melatonin is naturally produced in your body to make you sleepy.

We give 2-3 5mg tablets at dinner time. We use a bit of warm water, and melt the tabs. Then we fill the cup up with drink. He never knew he took it.

It does help, we even used it on my nephews, who have adhd. (We used 3-4 on them) When taken in a normal dosage it IS safe.

On a side note: For the ADHD, go check our your nearest vitamin store - there's something called Neuro PS or something like that. It doesn't MAKE them concentrate, but it ALLOWS them to focus more. It has worked well on my nephews.
