ADHD and a chiropractor or homoeopath?

Has any one used either or both of these for a child with adhd?

Both are potentially dangerous and unproven. Alternative medicines and practice that promise to cure all diseases should be avoided. Specific medicines exist to treat specific problems.

Alternative medicines that do "work" work on individuals who never had a problem in the first place.

Get psychological help for your child - like behavior and cognitive therapy, as well as medication.

PS. Don't listen to Yahoo! answerers whose only rebuttal to medical science is by attempting to antagonize other Yahoo! Answers users.

I'm not saying that everyone who seeks alternative medical treatment aren't ill. I'm saying that people who ARE ill are not going to benefit from a medicine that has not been proved to work.

When people claim that alternative medicine DOES work, it's because they either had no problem to begin with (people who think they're ill but are not), or it was because their illness was resolved by something else.

People who sell alternative medicines do not explain the exact chemical, biological or physiological process of their medicine. They can't put it in a scientific context. This is because they have little understanding of science. Instead, they give people vague explanations so they can convince them to buy their stuff.

Basically, it's a belief in magic passed off as science.

I've known a lot of people who have used aromatherapy, acupuncture, metal bracelets and strange herbal medicines they bought online, but have not benefited.

As for medicines and their functions: HIV ARVs are used to suppress the HIV virus, nothing else. It does great at its one job, but doesn't promise to clean your colon, make you see better or heal your broken arm.

Chemotherapy kills cancer cells, nothing else.

But chiropractors cannot cure a cognitive condition that originates in the mind - studies for this have been shown to be negative. This is for the same reason that a dentist cannot cure ADHD.

There are a lot of alternative medicines that claim to cure all diseases. Chiropractic is one of them, and so is aromatherapy.

There is no single medicine that can cure ALL illnesses, is what I'm saying. It's just not physically possible - for the same reason you cannot turn lead into gold, live in space without oxygen, or "flush out" cancer cells and viruses with herbal drugs.

What if someone told you that swabbing your forehead with aloe vera can cure a chest bullet wound, AIDS and cancer, because they are all "toxins"? Would you believe him, simply because he told you the aloe juices travel through the bloodstream and to the bullet wound, and corrodes the bullet? Or if he used words like "all natural" "detox" and "money back guaranteed"?

It's true that iatrogenesis occurs, but without conventional medicine, many of us would not be here today. Like smallpox vaccines (they eradicated it from the face of the earth) and birthing kits (antiseptics and hygiene procedure were invented using by scientific method - and save many womens' lives).

Don't drug your child. It doesn't work and can mess up the neurotransmitters for life.
Chiropractors and children are not something I recommend. It would have to be a very skilled and competent Chiro. I've found from experience chiropractors are like russian roulette. There are good ones but most of the bullet chambers are loaded if you get my drift (my neck still cracks all the time thanks to a chiro).
Homeopathy is something I'm also skeptical of. It might be a waste of your money and you're better of getting some live nutrition into your child. I recommend going to a Naturopath because they have the ability to do testing like MDs but a much broader range of treatments that are non invasive. Many ADHD children have recovered because of diet and natural supplements. You can check my page for references and good links to websites. Non synthetic supplements are the way to go, and can remineralize your child a great deal. I would also focus on the adrenals. The links on my page have products safe for kids and they can answer your questions. Good luck.

PS: I WOULD refuse insulin for type 2 diabetes because it makes diabetes worse. Between diet and anti infectives like reishi, I've successfully resolved Type 2 diabetes in many people.

Yes they can both help and cranio sacral osteopathy.

Biggy please explain the following --
"Medicines and practice that promise to cure all diseases should be avoided. Specific medicines treat specific problems. Alternative medicines that do "work" work on individuals who never had a problem in the first place."

If medicines that promise to cure all diseases are avoided that would be the end of conventional medicine and an end to the big Pharma -- hurray no more iatroggenic diseases !!

Why would people who never had a problem bother going for treatment in the first place?

chiropractor treatment in children, of a young age, could be vary dangerous because their bones aren't fully developed.

but even disregarding that point there is no real evidence to suggest either can be used to treat adhd...

we are talking about a brain problem here, it makes no sense to suggest that moving bones around, no matter how forcefully, will ever change the way the brain is wired.

and so far as homeopathy the vary concepts that function as the basis for these treatments run counter to everything we know about biology, one of the key tenants is that the chemical you are ingesting actually causes the symptoms you are trying to treat, but the chemical is so diluted that it isn't even present in the doses that you are taking. homeopaths pass this off by suggesting that some how 'the water remembers" but the body responds to real chemicals, not imaginary ones.

and no scientific study has ever been able to show that homeopathy works, every time they even get close the results disappear into the ether once measures are taken to remove selection bias.

Just in response to some other members answers...

I am a Pharmacy Technician and studied hard for my qualification which includes study of medicines, obviously, as well as anatomy and physiology, chemistry, pharmacology, biology etc......

I would therefore assume that people would NOT assume I was 'thick' and that I had every confidence in my ability to understand science and other complicated subjects.

I will not advocate that either conventional medicine or homoeopathic medicine is right for everyone or that it works for everyone.

Many conventional medications do not work for everyone either.

I would just like to take a minute to ask people to maybe do a little study into Homoeopathy instead of reading articles in the news.

Did you know that up until recently there were 5 homoeopathic hospitals in the UK and that you can get a Homoeopathic remedy on prescription. Look it up under 'homoeopathic hositals' OR 'Homoeopathy on the NHS'

Interesting....?

I really do feel that the people who are slating Homoeopathy are the ones who don't understand it fully. We fear what we don't understand and can't be bothered to look into just that little bit deeper.

The reason Homoeopathy doesn't get the proof it needs is because the big drug companies and the medicine big boys are worried that it will in fact work and destroy the whole pharmaceutical economy.

I don't expect anyone to change their minds, just to be a little more open to things and a little less like sheep following a flock ( i.e the media )

What are you doing to repress your child? What is the school's attitude to children? ADHD is the child's life force seeking freedom. He/she needs space to express, especially the destructive forces that are part of who we are. I could go on for pages, but until you can allow whatever he needs, it isn't going to go away. A committed therapist is the best answer, don't drug the kid for God's sake. Either a skilled healer ( not a "gone in 60 seconds" type), or a bioenergetics/ core energetics / Reichian based therapist.

Anyone who recommends Ritalin: YOU take it, then tell me how clever you are.

If your child has ADD or ADHD it could be due to a chemical imbalance in neurotransmitters. I can understand trying to avoid , as a parent, the "stigma" of a child on Ritalin, etc.

If your child was diabetic would you shun insulin ?
If he had thyroid disease, would you avoid thyroxin ?

Get him MEDICAL help. You'll both be better off in the long run.

Kids respond great to Chiropractic care!

I've been treating kids for almost 20 years who have been mis-diagnoised with ADD,ADHD or what ever the latest "epidemic" is.

Think of it,,,if a kid is 10 years old, his problem can't be older!

They respond great and they love it!

Chiropractic works extremely well for children with ADHD - it has to be real chiropractic and not some cheap immitation or substitute.
Get a good one off an HMO list.
Of course many people swear by homeopathy too -try both and make up your own mind.
