Are anger issues common in people with ADHD?

my ex boyfriend has MAJOR anger issues. which is exactly why he is my ex, much to his dismay.

he started seeing a shrink and the shrink told him that his anger comes from his ADHD.

she says that bc of his ADHD, he acts impulsively, and that's why he can't control his impulses to say the things he says and do the things he does.

i have never heard of this. i thought he was more bipolar than anything bc he is so sweet one minute and so angry the next.

can someone give me some input on this?

I know several people with ADHD and ADD and controlling their emotions when they were not on medication was evident in all of them. His therapist it right. But on the other hand, I was married to my ex 21 years he was not an alcholic he was not ADD or ADHD or bipolar he was just an angry, controlling, self centered, abusive man. I guess a therapist may say his issues come from being abused by his father as a child and he feels that all his problems are everyone fault but his. I personally feel that doctors diagnosed people with bipolar/ADD/ADHD and throw meds at them because it is easier that diagnosing the deeper issues.

I was going to say he sounds Bipolar when I read your description - or he may have Borderline Personality Disorder (bpd). Both cause problems with emotion regulation. When you have one sort of chemical imbalance, like ADHD, it is very common to have another one as well, such as bipolar or bpd. I think your ex is being under-diagnosed.

(For some reason, I can't get my Google to work, but you can Google "Borderline Personality Disorder" to find information about it. The good news is there is effective treatment for bpd with medication and a special type of therapy called Dialectical Behavior Therapy - it can be Googled also.)

Yes, I've seen this a few times. My nephew became very angry... out of frustration because he could not remember simple tasks. And yes... some seem to have no control of their impulses. It don't know how common the anger issues are in people with ADHD...I guess it depends on the individual and how prevalent the ADHD is.
