Does everybody with adhd need special education?

I have adhd without a learning disability and I'm taking supplements. I'm doing great on my own and am opposed to receiving help unless I ask for it.

My husband has adhd, or did when he was younger (its very mild now as he has either out grown it or learned to deal with it). He doesn't take anything for it now. He did when he was a kid but hated the disjointed feeling he got. He homeschooled during his high school years and did very well, simply because his mom understood how he learned best. Teachers in his school never cared, or rather they would change every year that the next person would barely begin to understand and he would be moving on to the next grade.

Alot of the cases I've seen with "learning disabilities" would actually be a miscommunication between student and teacher.

My brother learns very well but he doesn't have the hyper part of the whole thing. He does best when left alone with a book. If he was interested in it he'd learn it and memorize it to a tee. He didn't take meds either. He does have BAD tunnel vision and if you can channel that then you'd be ok.

My hubby is hyper so learning in short bursts help him. But again, he has to be interested or his brain ignores everything and lets it go in one ear; out the other.

I think you just have to find your learning style and apply your lessons to it.

No, there are other alternatives for ADHD students. Also, you can't qualify for special education unless there is a demonstrated need, such as a child with a high IQ completely underachieving due to ADHD. They qualify under the category, Other Health Impaired. But if you are doing well, you don't qualify and don't need it.

However, students who are demonstrating less severe problems are able to get a 504 plan which is part of the American with Disabilities Act. This plan allows students who do not qualify for special services to receive accommodations to their learning environment such as taking tests in a quiet room, more time for tests or frequent breaks. There is a whole list of these.

504 plans go through the school counselor. If you have a DX of ADHD and would like to take tests in a quiet area or small group, then talk with a counselor about 504 plans. These are not part of special education.

lol... they dont neccesarily do... most of the time.. they just need a better way of learning. They get so off track and want to get up and do something else... My husband has it.. lol.. through out high school, he wasnt special or anything, he just didnt like stayin at a seat for a long time.. or being on one subject for a long time.. things gotta get changed up alil... have a lil fun somewhere at some point. some kids just need a better way of learning thats all... or sometimes they just get in trouble alot lol.. and dont like paying attention.... i dont have it, but i hate reading for a long time lol... i'll fall asleep within 5 minutes.. sometimes i dont even get to the first paragraph... its just boring... my husband is very good in education.. knowledge is great!! he's so smart! but he still has to do something once in a while..

They said individual with DHD are categorized as special people,so even they have no learning disability, there's a big factor to consider and that is on "psychological behaviour" compared to some individual who has no DHD. In my opinion, special education is required to help them somehow be normal within the existing environment and peers that they live .

Well Im 56 and had it all my life. and I can say I could have used the help when I was younger. I went to college on a scholarship.I played football in Missiouri. but I could'nt take it in the classes. So I went in the service (Vietnam). and came out and became a police officer.I guess you can say I did OK without any help. but my sons all had adhd and got help and also medication and did well with there lives. hope this helps you.

nope. Unless its really serious. My boyfriend has ADHD, and he doesnt need any form of special education. Hes really smart, actually.

no--only if you can't keep up--

you may be eligible for a 504 plan that may give you things like extra time to complete tests or test retakes or assistance in breaking down long assignments

No, they give you meds, and your fine. Don't worry, you aren't retarded..
