Has any one had trouble with ADHD medication in their child?

My 5 year old son started Focalin XR, and I have seen slight improvements in his ADHD symptoms, but he has become very whiny and crys over things he wouldnt have before. Has anyone ever experienced this in their child with a medication before?

This is a side effect of the medication that WILL pass in time. It won't last months just a few weeks. I have a son who was diagnosed at 7 with ADHD and was put on Adderall XR and he went through the same exact thing and in a short amount of time this did end for him....

You will notice it when the medication has work off or even around bed time. It is ok for this to happen. Most all medications in this world have one side effect or another and sometimes we don't get them and sometimes we do.................this one is natural.

Do some reading up on the medication and it will be something I am sure that is listed.....Don't worry for him he will be fine...it will pass.

-- I hope this helps to reassure you from one mom to another of a child taking medication for ADHD --

-- good luck --

My first question is very important; did you have him evaluated by a team that is specifically trained in testing for ADD/ADHD? If your answer is no, then I strongly suggest you do this. If some MD handed you pills for your child without any extensive evaluation, they should be shot.

Pick up this book; The ADD Book, by Sears and Thompson, it is a comprehensive book that will help you understand how to help your son without turning him into a drug addicted child. Be VERY proactive when it comes to putting any medication into your child. We have many drug addicts in our culture today who were placed on meds as children. Don't let your son be one of those statistics in the future.
