For people with adhd ?

To anyone who has adhd and used Ritalin or other stimulants , how did you feel when taking the meds ? I have my 8 year old son who has 20mg LA Ritalin once a day just for school purposes . It is helping him a lot with his writing, memory and concentration as he was really suffering in the classroom without the meds. However when he comes home from school and i ask him how he feels , he doesn't give me an answer and just walks away to play or etc. I know one side effect he does have is that he doesn't eat much when the med is in effect. Do you remember how you felt when you took meds or are currently taking now ?. I would just like to get more information on the effects of adhd meds and know that i have made the right decision for him . I would appreciate no one criticizing me for the decision to medicate my son , just looking for some friendly advise . Thank you.

My grandson takes medicine for this. He has headaches and withdraws a few times a week into his own world, alone playing in his room away from everyone. His attention span is better but he still has problems that will only be resolved over time. He does the same thing when asked a question and I have learned to just be patient with all of this. Time is the greatest healer. Children don't have a vocabulary big enough yet to explain how they are feeling as many don't understand many of the feeling terms. I would just let him be, he will come around when he is ready. Having pictures of different facial expressions helps in getting him to tell you how he feels as well. Wishing you both wellness and good mental health

In the begginning your appetite will decrease. It takes months to get it back to normal. Other wise I would recommend the Ritalin. It's actually a good thing. Adhd medicine is much like coffee. The effects are almost similiar if not the same. I've taken adhd medicinde most of my life. Adhd medicine is like taking a lot of cofee except there is not drastic drop after it wears off. It will take time for him to get used to, but in the end it will make him a better student.

My daughter was ADD without the activity problem. She took Ritalin for a little while and would just come home and sit down. She did not communicate. She just felt like she didn't want to do anything. We took her off of it - it also disrupted her sleep.

to took a blind trial on 3 different meds for adhd but none
had any effect at all
i was getting thinner though
but no i felt just as irritable
and i was taken of dem as soon as da trail was ova

Personally, I just never felt hungry and maybe slightly physically agitated ( felt like i had to keep moving.) My brother on the other hand often felt blank, like didn't have an opinion or just didn't care.

I reccommend you have a sit down talk with hour son just to make sure it isn't depression, it doesn't sound like it, but I know sometimes it can occur and they just need a different medication.

Good luck!

P.S. I am grateful to my parents for getting me the appropriate medications and accommodations to help me succeed. I'd never put someone down for trying to help their kid. Congrats on the excellent parenting :) Have a great day.

I would never criticize you because I feel you are doing everything you can for your child. Many parents are so anti drug, that their children never get the chance to reach their full potential.
I take ADDERALL for ADHD inattentive type. I also experience the loss of appetite. I usually have to force myself to eat with it, but that is a common side effect with any stimulant. If it is helping him with school, and not displaying any negative side effects, it seems like it is working well for him. Other than the loss of appetite, the only thing I experience is if I don't take my meds everyday (which I don't have to) and then I take it for 3, 4 or 5 days in a row, I can stay awake sometimes for over 24hrs. It's not always a negative effect, as I get much accomplished.
I hope things work out well for him.

I tried two medicines when I was younger. I found that none of them worked for me, so I just stopped taking them altogther (with the doctors consent of course). I took two different forms of ridelin, stratera and focalin. Stratera made me feel nauseous all the time, so I didn't eat much. I got very skinny, but it wasn't healthy. I then tried focalin. With this medicine (it is very close to ridelin) I was very emotional and moody all of the time, but I didn't really talk much. I was never happy. Never. I was only sad or mad. I hope this response helps answer your question.
