One common appetite suppressant is Sibutramine (Meridia trade name).

Basically how this works is it messes about with the Dopamine and Serotonin levels in your brain.
These chemicals/hormones naturally occur in the body, the medication simply alters the levels which are present while on the medication.

I鈥檒l go into a little more depth for those interested.

Meridia is a neurotransmitter-reuptake-inhibitor.

Neurotransmitter: a chemical like dopamine that transmit nerve impulses across a synapse.

Reuptake: The process of recycling and reabsorbing the neurotransmitter molecules that were secreted in previous impulses to other neurons.

Inhibitor: a substance that decreases the rate of or stops completely a chemical reaction.

It is said to reduce the reuptake of serotonin by 53%, norepinephrine by 54%, and dopamine by 16%.

:WHAT THIS ALL MEANS:
Serotonin plays an important role in the regulation of anger, aggression, body temperature, mood, sleep, human sexuality, appetite, and metabolism.

This drugs main feature is its ability to suppress :APPETITE: by decreasing the chemical that controls appetite(serotonin).

I have ADHD, and i鈥檝e been treated with Ritalin(Methylphenidate) since I was 7 years old, for nearly 13 years i鈥檝e been on a drug which suppresses appetite in the same way as Meridia.

By the way, ever wonder the pharmacodynamic reason as to why crack addicts are so skinny? Loss of appetite is an adverse side effect of amphetamines, and it鈥檚 the desired effect of taking Meridia.

:Healthier options:
Orlistat (tetrahydrolipstatin), commonly known as Xenical or alli. Is a drug designed to treat obesity, it is available over -the-counter in one form or another. How it works is rather simple, it prevents the absorption of fats from the human diet. By doing this, it effectively reduces your caloric(calories) intake.

:Why this is better than just not eating?:

I could probably quote some statistic about how 70% of the fat stored in your body comes from actual saturated fat you consume in your food. But I can鈥檛 be bothered, and who cares anyhoo.

The fact is, not eating at all deprives your system of essential nutrient/minerals you need to function. Weight loss may be faster by not eating, but it sure as hell isn鈥檛 healthier. If you take these 鈥榝at blocker鈥?drugs, you are still getting the nourishment your body needs, if you love eating you don鈥檛 have to stop, doesn鈥檛 have dangerous side effects, doesn鈥檛 mess with your brains chemical levels and the list could go on...

The two options I listed are the only ones approved by the FDA for long term use, i鈥檓 not sure if this is still the case, so don鈥檛 quote me.

If you are under 18, very unlikely that your doctor will perscribe any type of weight loss medication.

Although medications such as adderall seem to be the perfect solution, you have to consider the negative effects that it will have on your body. Believe me, I know how you feel. However the drug is very addictive and your body becomes physically dependent on it. You may find that you wish you could stop taking it and are unable to. The only way to really know is to discuss it with your physician. That's the only way you could get it prescribed anyway. Just discuss the pros and cons with him. Whatever you do, don't take if for weight loss alone. Oh...and we all zone out in class. Congrats on your GPA. Good luck to ya :)
