Do you think ADHD/ADD is over diagnosed?

Do you think ADHD/ADD is over diagnosed?

I am 30 years old and just diagnosed. I did horrible in school, but my mom was very strict on me sooooo it was not that i was a bad kid.
I however had to take 3 tests extensively to determine for certain if this was my problem.
I think that the medicine is given out like candy to kids and the parents do play a huge role in this and want a quick fix instead of seeing exactly what the problem is and telling their children --they're the parent and this is how its gonna be.
My mom cried when i was diagnosed because she felt she had to be strict with me, but just didn't know that could be a factor.

Yes, I do. I wont say that I think mental health problems in general are OVER diagnosed, because many people suffer from them in silence and dont seek out medical help. I do think some mental health problems like ADHD/ADD and depression are wrongly diagnosed a lot though, and doctors medicate for things that are actually social problems rather than medical ones.

I work with children who have been abused and a couple of weeks ago I attended training on attachment disorders. The trainer, who is a therapist said that often attachment disorders are often mis-diagnosed as ADHD/ADD because generally doctors are too scared to tell the parents that something has gone with their parenting styles. ADHD/ADD takes the "blame" off parents so doctors feel more comfortable in giving this diagnosis.

Yes!

I personally think parents need to step up and give their kids

some good *** whipping disapline

you ever heard of carlos mencias joke?

"adhd/add? how come kids back then didnt have that now parents find any excuse for their children being retarded at school"

oh teacher please let my son pass this class he has add

naw lady come on all you need is too beat the crap out of your kid and straughten him up"

something like that

check it out on youtube =]

Yes I also think that this is an excuse for parents to not dicipline their child.

A friend of mind has a brother who has "ADD" he does some pretty vile things and no one says anything to him! not one peep. He now has no structure since being diagnosed and guess what! It has only gotten worse even with medication. He does not have ADD he needs a good smack on the tush and all of his things taken away from him.

Yes as an education excuse/rational for labeling the kid and finding an immediate way to deal with the child's problems. I am totally against using medication as the first and primary intervention until other interventions have been tried

Yes, and I don't consider it a mental illness. These kids just need stimulation and lots of time with their parents along with discipline. They don't need a shrink

nope i have add and it is worse as a kid as a adult i decided to go drug free no ritlian

extremely.

maybe it's just i don't think of it as a mental illness because i have suffered worse lol but yeah

YES!!!!!
