A lot of these illnesses run in families. For example, I have bipolar illness, my brother has Aspergers Autism. Aspergers Autism is frequently misdiagnosed as ADD. A lot of the symptoms are similar, and it takes a brilliant doctor familiar with the various disorders to determine which disorder she may have.

Also, treatment for one disorder may cause a problem for another. For example, treating ADD can cause a student who has both ADD and ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder) become more defiant.

There are many medications for all of these illnesses and the medications that help one child may not be the best medication for another child. Dosages have to be carefully adjusted.

You need to find a really good doctor. If you have a good pediatrician, ask him who he recommends. Start asking around for a good child psychiatrist, someone who specializes in this area. Then stick with it. Communicate with him. Tell him what side effects she is having on the medication and any improvements you are seeing.

Keep working with him and communicating with him. Be patient. It takes a long time to get things right.

I'm sorry to hear that your granddaughter is struggling as well as your family. It is so hard to see your kids feel that way. I have a ten yr. old son and I am having the same problem. He was diagnosed adhd, odd, bipolar disorder by one doc. Now there saying it's adhd not odd and depression and some anxiety issues (which runs in the family all of them even bipolar)
He sees a doctor for meds and then a counselor which seems to help the meds don't really seem to do as much as they should. My advice is just keep going to doctors until you find the one that works with your family. Keep loving them and let her know that you love her no matter what Good luck and god bless your family

Due to her family history, this sounds pretty complicated. I would only suggest looking into a book that might at least help with the ADHD, and you never know if it might help with other aspects of her difficulities, or not: "Allergies and the Hyperactive Child", by Dr. Doris Rapp (online used booksites). Please keep in mind that this book deals with adults, too, and the information in the book is equally helpful to both. Many ADHD people have times when they are very irritable and then times when they are silly and having fun. But, of course your grand-daughter does need to listen to her doctors so that she can keep on track. But, if you read the book or she does, maybe you may find some tips, here and there. Additionally, try to be very upbeat and find positive things to say to her. ADHD kids and teens hear a lot of negatives and this can be very frustrating. The following link has to do with ADHD. Good luck, and make sure your grand-daughter does listen to her doctors.

Check out ratemds.com. Go to the browse section at the top left and find a psychiatrist in your area with good ratings. Seeing a new Dr. is crappy but I went to 4 before I found one I liked.

Make sure to be sympathetic to her and a person she can come to when she feels awful. She may just need to be curled up near you and cry, other times she might need to vent. It's ok to say things like, "Yeah, this is all really crappy and unfair but we need to keep working to get you feeling better. You will get better. It is not your fault you're bipolar." She may need to hear some of that.

Let her be alone with the psychiatrist but also talk to her/him yourself to ask questions. Be her advocate. Since she's feeling awful, she's less likely to think to ask about medication side effects, when she should call the Dr. if the meds don't work or do something bad, or non-medication things she can do to feel better.

Good luck with everything. Your grand daughter obviously had a great person helping her through this really difficult situation.
