HELP! I have an 18 yr old son who has been diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 6, after numerous tries with meds? |
he refuses to take anything for this condition, because he cant eat anything all day long, it makes him extremely moody. But his hyperness and grades improve greatly. when he got old enough to stop taking them , he did, and almost immediately, his attitude and attention span were right back to when he was first diagnosed. Well now, his attitude and anger levels are the most god awful thing I have ever witnessed. He gets mad over the most ridiculous things and when he dont get what he wants he literally goes mad, and the look on his face looks demonic and down right scary and then he begins destroying the house, with his fists and it dont matter what it is, a tv, a mirror , a few doors, a door frame, etc. anything thats in his way the time his anger hits its a goner and im surprised he has not busted his hand yet, I walk on egg shells with this kid and we went to a phsychiatrist the other day, and he put us both on strattera, which takes a while to get in your system, well he started bitching about how he shoudnt have to take that because he dont feel any different, I tried telling him its going to take about 3 weeks before were going to see any results and he just cant get it through his thick head about the reasoning on why it takes a while, I am at my wits end , and I know if he dont get some sort of treatment somebody is going to get severly hurt or killed, thats how bad it is. since he is 18, is there any way I can have him committed in a mental health institution for evaluation and help befor it is too late? Please can somebody help a very desperate mother whose about to have a nervous breakdown. thank you all for your time, god bless. Have you ever tried dietary control of his adhd? Some people have found that a gluten free/casein free diet has helped tremendously with the symptoms of adhd. I myself had add as a child and big big mood swings only to find out as an adult that I was intolerant/allergic to both. Although now that he's 18 it's not as easy, you have a little less control over what he eats, but maybe on a day where he's more lucid and less angry you can talk to him about this. Good luck to you. Sounds like he may be manic depressed, which is often misdiagnosed as ADHD. get a 3rd opinion, 4th too and maybe 5th, try 6th and 7th Some times, in order for some one we love to get help, we need to let them fall. It's not pretty, it's not right, yet it's something we got to do. I know he breaks your heart every time you see him go "off". The law says he is of the age of consent. So you need to get the court to order him into your care. It is called a conservator-ship. He will probably have to be hospitalized to get him back on a even keel. They even might change his meds to something he might find easier to take. What ever you do, never lie to him nor trick him to take meds. Well since he is 18 it does make it a lot more difficult, I am sure you have tried to talk to him and get through to him. You must try a lot harder and if this gets any worse than you must have to do what every mother fears to do, ask someone to force him to take this medication. He cannot continue to do these kind of things because someone could end up hurt or dead. Try to catch him when he's in an alright mood and sit him down and be calm with him, talk to him, but be very patient with him. You must try to get this through his head and if he gets angry then just let him walk away, but your going to need to call someone for some help. I understand you've taken him to a psychiatrist, but try it again and if he gives you a hard time then threaten to kick him out of the house, but don't do it, make him believe that you are capable of doing so. I wish you and your son the best of luck. I'm 14 by the way(: Hopefully this works. If you need more help and this doesn't work then don't hesitate to e-mail me. =) |
