How do i help my son who has adhd , and is very impulsive.?

He doesnt sleep well , ever since birth, has a speech problem and he is very impulsive. examples : writing on walls when he knows he shouldnt , getting up in the middle of the night and getting food from ther fridge and smearing it all over the carpet ? I ask him why he does this he never answers ...He is 5 yrs old if anyone has any ideas for me please let me know. I dont have insurance right now. He is currently on 2 meds one to help him sleep and ritlan.

lets add alittle more .. I know how to disapline . I have a older child who is fine and a younger one who is also just fine. My son has some problems no due to disapline or attention he gets plenty expecially since he doesnt sleep well at night. I'm wondering if anyone is dealing witht children who behave this way or know of anyone who would be of help the speech problem is .. he talks just doesnt pronouce correctly, his hearing has been checked. His tonsils were removed so he could sleep without the meds he has been known to be up for a 24 hour time period and act fine until he crashes mid day . to my understanding children at this age need 10-12 hours of sleep per day for thier growing needs ? I resisted the medications until he was 4 and was uncontrolable. He does other very impulsive thingst there is just not enough room to write it all down.

I am a teacher and have seen a lot of this type of behavior, the impulsivity, the sleeplessness, and the speech. They could be any number of things, you really do need to see a specialist. The first thing you should look into is the Head Start program at school if he isn't already in school, which can help you with all of the problems. Speech problems are very common and can usually be addressed very well with therapy at school. The other things are usually best addressed with a combination of discipline (which you seem to have a handle on), social skills training, and medication. I have seen so many parents resist medication, and it often (not always) makes things worse, both the child and the parent. Children are cruel, they will tease him and stay away from them if he acts differently than they do. If he can't concentrate in school, he will do poorly, he will be held back, and he will think he is stupid. Anyway, your school will have tons of resources if you ask about them. Mention the speech problem first, it is the easiest to diagnosis and manage.

I hate seeing kids on meds to make them "behave". He needs discipline and a schedule...he needs to have a ton of exercises to burn up energy, not a TV all day. Get him into a karate class, soccor team or something like that. Set firm rules and appropriate punishment for his actions...Ruining the carpet is not an impulse, its a cry for attention. Kids need to know boundaries of what is acceptable and non acceptable behavior, they need to know what the consequences are for certain behaviors.

these are the things i would do and soon get him off the meds
