Why are Stimulants given for those with ADHD????

Stimulants increase acitvity, and those with ADHD are hyperactive. I don't understand why adderall and other simulants are given. Can anyone please explain this to me??? Also, how does a docor even diagnose ADHD??

Stimulants do not simply increase activity. They are called stimulants because they stimulate neurotransmitters within the brain. Stimulants like Adderall or Ritalin stimulate the neurotransmitters that regulate control impulses and behaviour.

Diagnosing ADHD is not simple. Many children (and even adults) with other disorders are labeled ADHD, when they may be something FASD (fetal spectrum disorder) or slight autism, or they are not diagnosed at all. The first thing a doctor does is make a complete medical history to rule out other reasons for the ADHD-like symptoms. It takes a couple trips to the doctor and some observations by the parents when it comes to classroom behaviour, communication and relationships with others, and how well the child can complete a specific task. Also, a physchologist with experience working with children or adults with ADHD is usually better at disgnosing or helping determine the diagnosis of ADHD.

To tell you the truth, most of them don't diagnose it correctly. Because they don't have to. The average person taking thier child to the doctor for this is so ignorant that he or she will believe anything the doctor tells him.

Stimulants have the opposite effect on ADHD people. That's how you can tell for sure if you have it.
