My son is ADHD, and has started having issues at school? |
my 5yr old son has AD HD, he was doing great there for a while, now he is starting to act up in class ALOT, today i got a call from the school to come and get him, he was yelling at the teacher, hitting tables and knocking chairs over, not listening at recess or pe, i mean the list goes on, i have grounded him from his bike since he loves that, taken tv away, i cant ground him from outside since he is adhd he needs to run and get his ENERGY out, but i dont know why all of a sudden he got worse i thought he was doing better, he dont act like this at home. if he did he would get the wood spoon. what can i do on my part to help him he is in kindergarten, and yes i can handle him, but not when iam not there at the time it happens example school. i have lowered the sugar intake to almost no sugar at all. any ideas would help alot, for things i could maybe do at home to help better his difficulties he's having. oh and he goes to bed at 8pm every night and gets up at 7am for school.thanks for all who answer. yes he is on meds he takes 1/2 and addorall in the morning when he gets up and 1/2 at noon when he gets home from school, i know alot of it isnt his fault and i dont use the wood spoon for everything, just the things i feel he needs a swat for. my cousin has a son that has AD HD and he put him in a karate class. I've heard of people putting their children in different classes that are age appropriate they say it has something to do with channeling their extra energy into something they enjoy and with that they will learn to control it more...hope this helps! My suggestion is sit down with him and go over the rules regarding whats expected in school. Tell him that if he doesn't obey then he will be punished at home for what he acts out in school. Hopefully, he will get the message in a short period of time. Remember one thing, don't just use threats, but carry out the punishment as necessary. He acts up in class, he gets spanked when he gets home. Simple, fast and effective I have found. Because he has ADHD is no reason for this. First thing that pops into my mind is how was he diagnosed? Did they rule out other problems before diagnosing ADHD or did they just go with that? My old brother has ADHD, and I have ADD. He started on his meds around your sons age. He was very, very hyper active, and the same thing happened to him at school. There's not really much you can do but talk to the teachers/principal about it. And if he's not on meds already talk to his doctor about getting him on some. A low dosage of Adderall or Ritalin normally does the job. Just remember - it's not his fault so don't result to a wooden spoon for anything. Your patience will be rewarded in the end. :) good luck. my son was just like yours for a while. and every once in while we still have episodes. i'm not sure if this will help for you, but it did for me... i started a star chart. it has simple chores for him to do daily, and he gets a dollar after he gets 7 stars. i think it gives him a sense of independence, and maturity. i found that he would get in these moods where he was tired of always being told what to do. recreational sports also helped a GREAT deal with his moodiness. as far as the anger, we still have those issues frequently, i just remind him that it is okay to be angry, but it's not okay to be mean and ugly to people. i tell him if he is angry to count to himself and take deep breaths. or if he needs to, just walk away for a few minutes. i also let him know that he is not the only one who gets angry, that i do too, and we try to work on it together. he reminds me when i'm getting too upset, and vise versa. hang in there, he will get better!!!! i hope this helps, my son is 6, and this has ALL happened within the last year!!!! |
