ADHD 9 y/o Boy - attitude?

My 9 year old son is sweet, smart and funny. HOWEVER--there are times when his attitude is SO BAD, he is VERY DISRESPECTFUL of me and his dad and sister. It completely disrupts our home life and when we punish him by taking away tv, video games, etc, it seems to have no impact.

His behaviour is better on adhd meds, but the times he is off is horrible.

I guess I am asking does this get better with age or is he always going to be this way? I am hoping maturity and intelligence will help him overcome some things. His dad has some of the same issues, but never got help as a kid. Our son is on meds plus sees a social worker on a regular basis. I am hoping these treatments will have positive impact.

Would love to hear from parents/others with ADHD who have "been there".

Thanks!

Hi! It DOES get better. I have an 11 yr old son with ADHD.
Firstly, he should never be off the medication. We used to give him 'breaks' on the weekends and summers until one time he came to us and told us that he could not think, he said his 'thoughts were going fast' and it was frustrating him, therefore he was cranky. Think about it, if you had 4 people talking to you all at once, would you not just flip out? I would... well, our lil guys can't tell everything around them to stop so they can concentrate on just the one thing they need to. So, it is pretty important for them to have it every day. From what I understand, as they near and go through puberty the ADHD will get better and they usually can come off of meds all together. So, hang in there Mama! The cool thing is that these kids are sweet and highly intelligent! But sometimes they are too smart for their own good and tend to have lil attitudes to go with it! My son is preteen now and omg!!! Some days I just want to throttle him. But, the one thing to keep in mind (My ADHD son is my oldest of three sons) is that some of this attitude is indicative to their age. I was always blaming the adhd and trying to figure out what to do from that angle when most of it was just his age. My other sons who do not have ADHD act just the same way that my first son did at certain ages. So, some of that attitude may just be 'boy'.
I know that I can only write so much in these answer spots, but my email is thecatdidit@sbcglobal.net. Please feel free to contact me if you ever want to chat or need encouragement. Raising boys can be tough, raising a boy with ADHD is tougher.
I look at my oldest son, who has a pretty teen attitude and am grateful that he got out of the 8yr old attitude that my other son is at. I can handle snotty, but omg!!! My 8yr old drives me nuts sometimes! It does get better with age. But if you want consistent behavior, good or bad, you need to have him take his meds each day so that he can focus each day. And I know you probably hear this all the time, but consistency. If you say it, mean it. My hubby one time doled out all this grounding and punishment and then went to work for the week and I was not able to follow all the way through. So, be careful what you say, lol. Make sure you can handle it if you have to. Just stick to your guns. My son loves electronics. So, when I have had enough, they all get taken away. And, ya, he becomes a whining handful... but just stick to your guns. Don't let him see that it bugs you and he will eventually get it. If he gets to be too much, then send him to his room so that he isn't pestering the rest of you. Trust me, he'll get it sooner or later. But, honestly... a lot of it is the age.
Anyway, I need to run, I hope this helped a lil!!! :)

talk to your doctor and keep him on the medicine. sit down and talk to him about it.

It would be good to get a food intolerance test done. Alot of ADHD behaviors, autism, bipolar etc...has to do with diet. Their symptoms get by far so much better w/ a correct diet plan than taking prescribed meds. The test that my wife took for her problems was alcat test. You can read about it at www.alcat.com.
There might be more tests available for you to do which you would have to research and ask around. We just know of the alcat.
She's been on the diet plan now for a week and have seen a big difference in her conditions that no medication before would relief before.
I will star this question and hopefully my contacts from alternative medicine may help to answer.

my little girl is the same age mate and we're just coming through the other end and seeing the sweet natured honey she really is ... i've had the same issues with her since she could talk ..... she's lactose intolerant and also very intolerant to processed sugar ..... wild wild woolly tantrums, insomnia, achy bones ..... she was forever asking me to yank on her arms and legs as they were aching and sore ..... unaddressed food intolerances inhibit nutrient absorption on a wide span ........ a full assessment by a naturopath would be a good place for a person to start buddy ........ they can do testing for food allergies/intolerances and chemical sensitivities .......what you ingest and absorb through your skin and breath can have a vast impact on the way you think, the way you feel and your overall health and vitality ....... seriously, you can live a pain free drug free life if only you know precisely what chemicals and foods are upsetting your system .... it could be something as simple as an intolerance to processed sugar or artificial flavorings and colorings or flavor enhancers like "MSG" or artificial sweetners such as that diabolical "Aspartame" ...... it has been documented that aspartame triggers behavioural and physchiatric problems to start with ....or it could be any one of the vast amount of chemicals and "preservatives" that they pump our packaged food with ........ disorders from which people suffer due to intolerances to food or chemicals in their diets can cover almost the whole spectrum of physical and mental illnesses ..... an extraordinary concept but mind blowingly true.

in the meantime, try to include as much whole fresh foods that you prepare yourself that includes a wide range of leafy and green vegies, low sugar fresh fruits like watermelon, cantalope, pears and strawberries, some lean meats and fishes, whole grains and cereals like brown rice ..... wholegrain breads and cereals like brown rice are rich in vitamin B1 (thiamine) which is essential in keeping the nervous system, heart and muscles functioning normally ...... brilliant for increasing levels of focus retention and memory ....... don't supplement with any of the B complex individually though but rather as a whole group if supplementation is a choice ....... ditching the white bread, pastas, cakes, pastries, chocolate, sodas, pop, soft drinks, candy, sweets ..... all terribly high in nutritionally void, chemically processed sugar .... and also ditching all foods labelled "diet" ... which is pretty much a red flag that it contains artificial sweetners such as aspartame ..... aspartame .... toxicsludge chemically enhanced aspartame ........... google "sweetpoison ..... a website set up by Janet Hull"............ include organic nuts and seeds like almonds, brazil nuts and sunflower seeds and lots of fresh filtered water .......... feeding your body from God's table and weaning ourselves off all the highly processed, packagedsludge that has little to no nutritional value anyway, has an EnOrMoUs impavct on the way our brains function and our bodies bounce
.

a diet high in man made highly processed nutritionally void sugar will leach you of your water soluble B complex of vitamins which are so very essential for healthy neural, immune and digestive functioning, vitamin C and leach the calcium right out of your bones ...... it raises the levels of uric acid in your blood stream thus prompting your body to leach the calcium and magnesium right out of your bones in an effort to neutralise it ..... icky, calcium deficiency ensues ..... ie ~ achy bones, irritability and moodiness, headaches and migraines, insomnia, nasty nasty mood swings, terrible scary dreams, bloating and constipation........ high amounts of animal protein and processed salt will do the same thing ..... growing bodies need calcium and magnesium for healthy neural functioning, heart bone and tooth health and digestive health ....... fresh green vegies and fresh fruits are all incredibly rich in calcium and will bolster his neural system and are far easier to assimilate than all that milk and dairy ....... without all the added nutritionally void processed sugar.

drinking plenty of water and staying well hydrated will also go a long way to maintaining focus and clarity.

i sincerely do wish you & your precious family all the best of health & vitality.

(((huggs)))

peace baby
