Do you believe in acupuncture?

eastern medicine and alternative medicine's efficacy have been a major issues in medicine. personally, i believe in the possibilities.

There have been many people claim that acupuncture worked for them. Just as many claim that it doesn't.

Acupuncture is not meant to heal or cure life threatening conditions. It is meant as a way to compliment a holistic approach to an illness.

Acupuncture, on the whole DOES in fact work. The World Health Organization has approved acupuncture as an actual medical treatment for many ailments. One session usually does not take care of the underlying problem. Several treatments are often necessary. Many people claim that it doesn't work because they don't give it a chance.

While acupuncture is often associated with pain control, in the hands of a well-trained practitioner it has much broader applications. Acupuncture can be effective as the only treatment used, or as the support or adjunct to other medial treatment forms in many medical and surgical disorders.

The World Health Organization recognizes the use of acupuncture in the treatment of a wide range of medical problems, including:

* Digestive disorders: gastritis and hyperacidity, spastic colon, constipation, diarrhea.
* Respiratory disorders: sinusitis, sore throat, bronchitis, asthma, recurrent chest infections.
* Neurological and muscular disorders: headaches, facial tics, neck pain, rib neuritis, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, various forms of tendinitis, low back pain, sciatica, osteoarthritis.
* Urinary, menstrual, and reproductive problems.

Acupuncture is particularly useful in resolving physical problems related to tension and stress and emotional conditions.

In order to understand acupuncture's healing properties, you need to understand how it works.

The classical Chinese explanation is that channels of energy run in regular patterns through the body and over its surface. These energy channels, called meridians, are like rivers flowing through the body to irrigate and nourish the tissues. An obstruction in the movement of these energy rivers is like a dam that backs up in others.

The meridians can be influenced by needling the acupuncture points; the acupuncture needles unblock the obstructions at the dams, and reestablish the regular flow through the meridians. Acupuncture treatments can therefore help the body's internal organs to correct imbalances in their digestion, absorption, and energy production activities, and in the circulation of their energy through the meridians.

The modern scientific explanation is that needling the acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals in the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These chemicals will either change the experience of pain, or they will trigger the release of other chemicals and hormones which influence the body's own internal regulating system.

The improved energy and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the body's natural healing abilities, and in promoting physical and emotional well-being.

I hope this helped!

I turned to acupuncture and natural medicine years ago after more traditional medicine further damaged the health conditions I was looking to treat. Before trying acupuncture I was very skeptical, but wasn't sure what else to do so I gave it a try. Five years later I am happy to report it absolutely works well for me and I now use it as a preventative therapy for illness.

The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine is a great place for anyone looking to read documented research on acupuncture or any other natural medicine studies.

It is always important to be cautious. There are bad practitioners in every field and I do believe acupuncture (like anything else) can be harmful if not done properly.

No, not at all. I tried it and it didn't do anything for my life threatening condition. I don't see how a bunch of needles can lead to anything good but infection and lost money. (I don't believe in western medicine or drugs either!)

Once or twice I've gotten jabbed with something relatively sharp -usually dropping something on my foot or walking in to something- and had another part of my body completely relax. Not go numb, just relax.

They might be on to something.

I messed my knee up in a car accident and they tried acupuncture, they stuck those little needles in my messed up knee and It hurt!! It doesn't work at all

Accupuncture saved my life

I'd say it does more harm than good.
