Is there a way of testing for alcohol allergy or intolerance? ?

A little while ago I stopped drinking. Not for any moral reasons I just didn't really enjoy it.

the thing is though about a year after when I had alcohol again it made me feel very ill. If I even have a sip of wine it feels a lot like an allergic reaction; dizziness, shortness of breath, nausea, hypotension etc.

It's getting quite annoying as all I want is to have the occasional glass of wine but I can't even do that anymore. I'm terrified of drinking when I'm not at home in case this happens and people think I'm hammered drunk.

I have been reading about alcohol intolerance and my doctor also thinks this is what it is although she didn't test. I know certain allergies can be tested for but is there a way of testing for alcohol specifically? It's not a yeast thing either she ran a coeliac test on me

Yes, if you suspect you have an allergy, pop along to your GP who can arrange a simple RAST test (radioallergosorbent) This test, tests for IgE antibodies to potential allergens. Although for accuracy, this is often followed by a food (or in your case alcohol challenge). Allergy blood tests are not nearly as sensitive as skin tests are. For this reason, some people who have a positive reaction to a skin test can then take a blood test and receive a negative reaction. You'd have to show them the actual alcoholic beverage you had...it may not be the actual ethanol your allergic too (it could be the grapes in the wine for example)

yeast has nothing to do with celiac. um, ever think your tolerance is just low since you didnt drink in a while?? shortness of breath can be caused by sulfites found in wine, u could be allergic to sulfites. check if purer alcohol uses sulfates, like vodka n mix with juice. YOU CANT be allergic to ethanol itself.
you said u only tried wine, try other stuff, many people allergic to sulfites in wine. try getting a skin prick test of ethanol if you want.

pop back to the doctor and ask for the intolerance test, i stopped drinking for about 2 years and when i had just about 2 sips of wine i felt really yuk but i just put it down to the abscence of alcohol for such a long time and feeling the effects of it alot more because of this

Go to the Doctor and ask to get tested.
But get a different Doctor. Sometimes when people think they KNOW us they overlook things and assume way too much.
Someone new will probably take you more seriously!
Good luck
