Symptoms to formula allergy? what formula is your baby on, why did you switch? |
I breastfed for the first 1 1/2 weeks, but because of failure to produce (happened with my first too, but was able to bf her at night only) i stopped. Her diapers were not sopping wet, and it seemed like she was getting dehydrated. Started her on Good Start Natural Cultures, but because of the high iron, her breath was awful, and she had gas that would clear out a room. She did fine on it, but she "smelled" lol. I told her Dr. this, and then switched her to Good Start DHA and ARA. She is 3 weeks tommrrow. He said it was good staying with the same brand. That is what I had my 1st daughter on too. It seems she did fine for the first week, but the last couple of days she has had a few episodes of explosive spit up, and gas pains. Sometimes I couldn't even get a burp out of her. Now I just fed her, and then I changed her, and she has a rash from head to toe, it's all red in her diaper area, and I put diaper cream on her with every diaper. I asked my husband if he saw the same thing and he did, it's not a raised rash though. Just small red dots everywhere. Should I switch her to Good Start Soy?? Or just another formula? Is this a sign that she probably is allergic? And is it weird that I couldn't handle milk or milk products when I was pregnant with her, they would make me sick and give me awful stomach aches and gas? i use playtex drop ins Yes, I believe your baby is allergic. My 1st daughter was rashy head to toe, fussy, spit up all the time and never slept through the night until she was 10 months old. I too could not breastfeed so at 6 weeks my Dr. put her on Similac w/Iron. I wish I was smart enough to change her formula - I think it would've made a difference with her. My 2nd daughter started all the same symptoms at 4 weeks when I gave up breastfeeding. However this time my husband was working for Abbott and brought home a soy based Similac to try - that made all the difference in the world. She started sleeping through the night and all the nasty spit-up stopped along with the fussiness. My 3rd daughter - the same story as my 2nd. When my little boy came along I just put him on soy from the start. However soy gave him terrible diarrhea, so we switched him to a lactose free Similac. He was as good as gold after that. Don't be afraid to try different formulas - I wish I was smart enough with my 1st. Maybe you can try a lactose free rather then switching to soy. My baby started on the soy and we changed him to Enfamil Lactose Free Lipil which was working for him however our doctor changed us to a Similac brand because they make the same formula but specially designed for gassy and fussy babies. It seems to work good for us. My Daughter is on Similac Sensitive- and does GREAT! After endless amounts of Formula tried, we finally found Similac Sensitive- It is perfect for babies who are fussy because of Gas Pains, and it helps with acid reflux as well. my son was like that to with regular milk based formula. it would hurt his little tummy so bad and he would just cry and cry and it would also constipate him so we figured out he has a milk allergy. we switched to enfamil Nutramigen, that stuff does wonders! it seriously worked after the first feeding, I'm not kidding! he's been on that since he was about 3 or 4 weeks and he is now 5 months and still on it. he is the happiest baby ever and never gets a tummy ache from eating anymore, and he goes to the bathroom about 2-4 times a day. also for gas pains i used mylicon infant gas drops, it works very well. hope i helped, good luck!! I would go with Soy, I just switched my daughter from Goodstart DHA ARA to Natural Cultures, then today I put her on Soy, she was constantly spitting up and throwing up (actual convusions) My doc said it could be intollerance to milk, which most babies eventually grow out of. I'd call her pediatrician for sure, but my advice is try the Soy...sounds like an allergy to me. First, congrats!!! |
