Can anyone help? severe allergy to carpet?

My partner and i have just moved into the home of our dreams, but one major problem has arisen. Since moving in my bf has been having very serious allergy problems, he has had to be hospitalised at least once a week since moving here and the doctors have him on both anti histamines and steroids. Due to the prolonged use and high dose of the steroids the Drs have said he needs to come off them, but the allergy is putting a huge strain on his heart and white blood cell count is extreemly high.
We live in rented accomodation so cant change the carpets as they are very very expensive and dont think landlord would allow us to replace them with a cheaper alternative.

I am hoovering regularly and this does help but he is still very very uncomfortable and he is still very dependant upon the steroids, without them he will certainly end up back in hospital.

Does anyone know of a spray or simular treatment to prevent the wool particles from leaving the carpet? or a way to stop them from getting in the air.

We have 7 kids between us and they are constantly running about, which i think is kicking up more particles into the air etc.

Any help or advice would be gratefully recieved.

There doesn't seem to be such a spray. Often the allergy is to the chemicals used on the carpet (in manufacture). Apart from opening windows, regular vacuuming and carpet cleaning there is not much else you can do.
Could you do without carpeting? waxed floorboards look great, you could have the odd cotton rug for colour.
There is alternative flooring too, migh be worth looking into.
Although I know with the thunder of seven children you need something quiet!
There are cork, vinyl, linoleum, rubber.floorings.

Ask your landlord for an alternative place to stay, I'm sure they would move you if they value their reputation or get them to bring an environmental health officer round to check what the problem is because it may be the cleaning products that they used before you moved in rather than the actual carpet

1) get a HEPA air filter for your rooms

2) keep your place well ventilated - air the place out

3) new carpet odors dissipate with time

4) install a HEPA filter on your vacuum cleaner

5) contact your local carpet cleaners for treatment service

Hi, the allergy your husband is experiencing is quite likely the wool content in the carpet. Because of the risk/benefit ratio with steroids; steriod therapy is not really recommended in the long term management of allergies (unless absolutely necessary). Antihistamines many offer some symptomatic relief. To be honest, the only real answer is to remove the carpet and limit future exposure. Have a chat with your landlord. Wooden floors are the answer for allergy sufferers. Since replacing all my carpets (and as one of the poster above said, just having the odd cotton rug here and there) my allergies are almost non existent. Also, dustmites etc live deep in the carpet pile. Hoovering daily, or twice daily will remove the loose wall particles, but still not completely...I know of no treatment to stop this.

Like I suggested, have a chat with the landlord, if he is unwilling to replace the carpet, you may find you will have to move or pay for a new carpet. As this is effecting your husbands health, the council may offer you temporary accommodation until you find somewhere suitable.

If allergy is an issue, try to avoid any further allergic reaction by using chemical sprays or treatments.
It may sound simple but I found it worked for me;
Trigger spray (that you would use to spray household plants) with just water and maybe a touch of fabric conditioner mixed in to give it a little fragrance and lightly spray the carpetly occasionally especially after hoovering.
Obviously do not spray near electrical equipment or sockets.
As its only water, any over spray onto polished surfaces should just wipe away without staining.
