What kind of dog would be best for someone with allergies?

I love dogs, but they make me itch and my eyes water. Ive been looking at labradoodles and they sound pretty good. I am allergic to Maltese, but Im not sure about Yorkies..

Labradoodle is not a breed - they are part Lab and part Poodle. That only gives them a 50/50 shot of inheriting the Poodle traits of non-shedding and allergy-friendly coat. Less, considering those are two different traits!

Stick with a purebred, you''ll have a better shot. If you're allergic to a Maltese then you're only bet is to spend time with well bred adults and pups from a reputable (show dog) breeder who health tests and breeds to standard.

Stay away from dogs that shed OR are known to have dry sin or skin conditions. So no Labs, Shepherds, Retrievers, Shar Pei's, etc.

Remember that no dog is truly "hypoallergenic." As you found out you CAN have a reaction to a dog on the "hypoallergenic" list. You could also be perfectly fine with a dog that is NOT on the list. It depends on the severity of your allergies and the individual dog.

Don't count on the 'doodles' and 'poos' if you have allergies. You can never be sure of how a mixed breed's coat will affect your allergies. It doesn't matter if it's got Poodle or any other breed that's considered low-allergen; mixed breeds are always a crapshoot in this situation.

If you're suffering with a dog that's a known low-allergen type, then you're probably out of luck.

Labradoodles are mutts bred by irresponsible people filling up shelters.

If you're allergic to dogs, don't get one. If you're allergic to a dog like a Maltese that is typically 'hypo' then there is a good chance you would be allergic to the other ones as well. It would be worse to get one and find out you're too allergic to keep it and then have to rehome it.

A labradoodle is not a real breed. You would be getting a dog from an irresponsible breeder(a.k.a. a BYB). If you are allergic to Malteses then you are most probably allergic to dog saliva since a Maltese is an hypoallergenic dog. The reaction you have with a Maltese would be the same reaction for a Yorkie and just about every other dog.

There is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog. A "hypoallergenic" dog is simply one who has hair rather than fur. The cause of allergies isn't because of the fur, it's because of the dander that dogs produce. Therefor getting a "hypoallergenic" dog will not make it so you won't be allergic, sorry.

Good luck though!

Pretty much any dog in the terrier group will be the "hypoallergenic" type (although there is really no such thing)

My favorite picks:
West Highland White Terrier
Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier
Miniature Schnauzer

portugese water dogs (like president obama just got) are wonderfully smart dogs, and are supposedly hypoallergenic. they're very similar in appearance to a labradoodle

I assume the fur is the problem. If you can stand the sight of a hairless dog that's my suggestion. Poor things.

Poodles but they do actually shed

Havanese........very rare and very expensive

Portugese Water dogs Petfinder.com has them

Labradoodles arn't hypo-alergetic. Mixing with the poodle doesn't guarantee an alergy free dog.Why dont' you must get a poodle..

poodle
shichons
