Anyone have any ideas for seasonal allergies in dogs?

Last year, my dog had several skin issues. We cleared them up at the vet's with antibiotics and the vet said they were all due to "flea allergies". Well, my dog is getting hot spots again, on his back. I have checked him up and down for fleas and flea dirt, and he is on a high quality dog food that has not been changed since last fall. He did not itch at all during winter. Does anyone have any advice on controlling itching without the use of steroids?

I can understand your frustration. My Border Collie also has seasonal allergies that always lead to hot spots. I suggest taking your dog to the vet and getting a cortizone (sp?) injection. It relieves the itching for a little while.

Before I continue please ASK YOUR VET first before doing what I suggest , for many vets will disagree with me, as is their right.

If the itching persists, and if and only if, your vet gives the ok, then give your dog a very LOW dose of children's Benedryll. If your vet says no, don't be upset. Many vets believe that human medicines should not be used on animals, I agree 100 percent, too much will destroy their liver and kidneys and cause an overdose or premature death. (I've already given this spiel once tonight) however, this will temporarily stop the itching untill any hot spots can heal.

Bathing your dog with sensitive skin shampoo for dogs with allergies as well as changing his food to one that promotes healthy skin might also help.

i also give my dog benadryl because she is alergic to fleas and brakes out in hives it really work but as was stated it makes them very sleepy or lazy in some of my dogs others itdoesn'tt give them any side effects!

1-2 mg per pound every 8 hours!

Our vet told us to give our dog benedryl. It helps, but makes him sleep alot. Ask your vet about it. You have to give the proper dose for the dog's weight. Oatmeal shampoo and creme rinse helps some, too. If all else fails, there are doggy dermatologists.
