What can I safely take for allergies while breastfeeding?

I plan on calling the doc but am looking for experiences from other moms. My allergies are going crazy and I need an herb or something that I can use while BF. I have heard fenugreek will help.

I was told that Zyrtec is safe while breastfeeding. have seasonal allergies too :(

Do not take Benadryl though, my doc told me to avoid that completely. It's not safe for the baby

I took fenugreek and while it helped some with increasing my milk production it did not do much for my allergies.

I have been taking a safe, natural supplement for the last year. It's helped with my Asthma and allergies. I even give it to my three kids.

There is a fabulous website here that is a great starting place:

http://toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/ht...

You do need to know the actual name of the drug, not just the trade name. If you have the medication around, it will be on the pkg, or you can use the internet to find it.

I was looking into this question before visiting my family last month, since I always have allergy problems there. "small and occasional" doses of benadryl are ok. Pseudoephedrine (sudafed) is ok for your baby but can decrease your milk supply. Loratadine (Claritin) is actually listed as the preferred antihistamine.

Almost no matter what the drug, the peak of it in your milk is usually 1-2 hours after taking it, so try not to be nursing in that window. One does at night would be ideal.

Call your pediatrician they should be able to give you a list of stuff you can take. My allergies are crazy right now too, so are my kids.

That would be a good question for your doctor, as what may be ok for one lactating mother may not be good for another.
