How do you deal with a co-worker you strongly believes has Alzheimer's disease? |
I have a co-worker who I believe is in the beginning stages of Alzheimer's disease. About a year ago I was her acting supervisor for a brief period. I had another supervisor from a another unit housed in our office tell me a strange story about her. She told me she ran into my co-worker at a restaurant and she was with her family and they stopped for a brief period to introduce each other. When my co-worker introduced the supervisor she renamed her. The supervisor stopped her and said that's not my name. She said my co-worker paused for a moment and told them, "ok, have a nice day" and just walked off. Honestly it does not sound like Alzheimer's, more ditzy and tuned out, in any case, just let it be, as someone else pointed out you are no longer her supervisor and she is able to do her job so no harm no foul. Since HIPAA has been implemented, medical issues are considered legally sacrosanct so best not to speculate or allude to what you think may be wrong with this woman, for your sake and for hers. Her medical conditions are none of your business. And she is protected by law from having to disclose them to you. You are no longer her supervisor, so stay out of it. You shouldn't do anything. First of all none of this has affected her work yet. Second, you aren't her supervisor anymore. This is a hard one. You feel badly for the woman, but yet right now she is only a co-worker to you. Until her direct Supervisor has a problem with her, or she does something that directly affects her work I don't think you actually should get involved. It could possibly be stress related or many other things and jumping the gun and saying something could lead to you getting in trouble for making false accusations. People today are much more sensitive and much less tolerant of others being in their personal business. My advice is that until a Supervisor has problems with her, stay out of it. It is however nice that you are concerned. |
