What is a learning activty for asthma? |
its for a school project You can get yourself a big empty pixie stick straw for you, regular drinking straws for class, and yarn. You can punch a hole towards the top of your pixie stick straw. Thread the yarn through it and tie it off. Wrap the yarn around the straw numerous times starting from the hole to the other end. The straw would be your airway and the yarn would be the smoothe muscle around your airway. For the class you can make some slits on the top of the straw before you give it to them.... this will save some time. Have the class blow through the straw once the yarn has been wrapped loosely around it. Next have the class pull the yarn really tight around the straw. Have them again blow through the straw to show them how an asthmatic feels when they are breathing. The tightening of the yarn will represent constriction of the smoothe muscle around the airway. You can also explain that there is some inflammation/swelling that also goes on with the airway during an attack. If you need a visual, send me your email address and I can make some examples and send you some pics. |
