Can you get kicked out of the military for having exercise-induced asthma?

Im not 100% sure if I have it and would appreciate if anyone told me how I could find out for sure. And if I got a medical inhaler does that come up when the military see's my medical history the day I ship?

Travis, why would you go to basic with exercised induced asthma?(asthma is a DQ, by the way)... You going for a fraudulent enlistment?

Exercise is only part of it, you could have an asthma attack in the field or under fire.

Why can't you kids think about the ramifications for those that you will be working with.

If the military knows that you have asthma, they won't take you.
The only way the military will know that you use an inhaler or have asthma is if you tell them or you have been seen in a military hospital or veteran's hospital and have files on record there.
If you don't tell them and you've never been to one of the above docs, then they won't ever know.
If you have issues with asthma and have to use your inhaler, it may not be the best idea for you to join the military. I say this because when you get deployed (yes, you will eventually be deployed, no matter what branch you join), you have an asthma attack say in the desert and you have on your gas mask, then you can get yourself or others killed because you had an asthma attack.

To find out if you have asthma, you need to have a PFT, aka a Pulmonary Function Test and a Methacoline Challenge performed. This lets the doctors know if you have asthma or not. You usually talk to your regular doctor first to get it set up and is done by a specialist.

No, not necessarily. If it is a huge problem that affects you greatly, you might have some trouble. Otherwise, if it's not too big of a deal, do not tell them. The only way they can know about your medical conditions is if you tell them. But you definitely cannot have an inhaler or any medications. That's an automatic disqualification.

So in sum, keep your mouth shut and you'll be just fine.

What happens if your in a fire fight and have an asthma attack and 15 people are relying on you and can't catch your breath and then all 15 die because you didn't get weeded out sooner. I certainly hope so. Don't take it wrong, but you become a liability if you have Physical activity induced asthma. Combat is physical. Or do you think its fair that you get to stay behind a desk in an air conditioned office while others fight the battle, all because you have asthma ?

Yes you can and should be medically seperated.

If they know before you sign, they won't let you in I'm pretty positive. They don't mess around when it comes to asthma. If you get in before they are aware, they will most likely medically discharge you. You should however talk to a recruiter and see what they have to say about it, so you don't waste anyone's time including your own.

Yes, but not in all cases. Once you are in there are many different ailments you can get and stay in with that would have barred you from enlisting in the first place. How that comes to be is complicated so I will leave it as a "maybe".

If you have had asthma after your 13th B day THAT is a big DQ for the first enlistment.

SSG US Army 73-82

They will kick you out if you require an inhaler or any medication for it. They only know what you tell them anyway, so if it doesn't affect you or impede your performance greatly, then don't tell them about it. Provided it doesn't cause you any problems, you are good to go!
