What happens if asthma goes untreated?

I am not sure if I have asthma, but after running a mile or two, I began to wheeze and my chest feels very tight. What will happen if I really do have asthma but I do not treat it?

Asthma can escalate very quickly if severe, or if the "perfect storm" exists. Most people don't realize it but asthma kills people each year - and many of them are found in their cars because they were trying to drive themselves to the pharmacy to refill their inhaler or to the emergency room. I know one woman who would have died in her apartment had her mom not called EMS, and a former neighbor lost her son last month secondary to an asthma attack. Suggest you see your doctor and get this under control.

Garth, in your other question you said you were sick and before you were better you worked out. You should discuss this with your doctor to get a definitive diagnosis and have him/her advise you on what you can do.

........after running a mile or two would cause wheezing and chest tightness for most who are not conditioned athletes. Is this the only time you exhibit signs of shortness of breath?

you should ask your doctor about an inhalor, if you don't treat it, it becomes worse later on.
