Can anyone recommend a CHEAP, portable biofeedback machine ? Or how to build one yourself?

for stress reduction

Years ago, I worked (briefly) with a biofeedback therapist at a psychiatric hospital. One of the best (and cheapest) "machine" is to get one of those inexpensive digital indoor/outdoor thermometers, the one with the wired probe that goes outside the window (not the new wireless kind).

To use, simply peel the adhesive off the outside probe. Place it on the tip of your index finger, using a bit of first aid tape to hold it in place. Let the temperature "stabilize" for a minute or so, and write down the temperature. This is your baseline.

Now, follow your relaxation routine (e.g., tape, etc.). Immediately after, read the number again. Your temperature will actually rise the more relaxed you are (increased blood circulation in your extremities).

To this day, I still use this technique with some of my students (I'm a masters-level school psychologist). Good luck!

In the time I've used this technique (about 12 years now), I've only had two people whose temperature *didn't* rise. And the kids I work with get a kick out of it! :-)
