Can anti-depressant medication conduce Bipolar disorder?

I have been recently diagnosed with depression. Prior to this diagnosis, I have never been on medication.

My doctor says that I show some symptoms of Bipolar disorder, but mostly he and the residing nurse believe that I'm suffering from depresssion.

At first I was on Celexa which allieviated my angry moodswings, but the side effects included terrible insomnia and teeth clenching.

So, now they're putting me on 50 mgs if Zoloft.

I am worried that this expermenting may cause chemical imbalance and I may become bipolar.

Even though I am only a potential candidate for bipolar disorder, I really don't want to exacerbate the situation and suddenly be diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Does anyone know about or have any experience regarding this?

thanks!

Sure! Conduce is a word. Just not one we use often. Conduce meaning to contribute or lead to. Induce would bring out or influence. I think they are more or less the same depending on context.

I do not believe any SRRI's can bring out a bipolar disorder it can not start one either it would just make it worse or make it better so just keep taking your medication that hes giving you and keep him updated on whats happening to you.

The antidepressant isnt going to make you bipolar, no. But if you are in fact bipolar and not just depressed, it can increase the bipolar symptoms. Bipolar people need to be rated with a different kind of medicine. Zoloft won't help with bipolar. If you notice worse symptoms, go to your doctor as soon as you can, but DONT stop taking the medicine yourself.

If this doctor suspected even a trace of bipolar he should have halted and given you a through evaluation. I would seek a recommended professionals second opinion.

Bipolar disorder is very serious and has destroyed many families and lives. Look up your trusted primary care physician and ask for a phone conference, they should call you back and have at least a couple of names of trusted professionals that specialize in bipolar disorder.

Sometimes you can find other local resource and city guides, Phoenix, AZ puts out a guide once a year (independent publication) of outstanding doctors of all sorts recommended by only colleagues.

A lot of people with Bipolar disorder are misdiagnosed with depression.
The medications don't help either. People suffering from bipolar disorder need to be put on a medication for their manic episodes and another for depression.
Being only on an anti-depressant when you are bipolar makes your situation worse.
I would seek a 2nd opinion.

CAUSE no, on-set yes. You have to already be predisposed to bipolar disorder (which u show symptoms) if you can not control your cognitions without meds. then the best thing is to take them (meds) but if you haven't tried to go through cognitive therapy I would try that 1st. If your feelings don't improve you need the meds, but if you can stay feeling like your in control, just stick w/ therapy.

Bi polar and depression are different
Bi polar is a mental disease that sticks around usually until you die
depression comes and goes as you travel on the roller coaster of life
bipolar has to be treated with medication defiantly
depression sometimes all you need is a vacation or just someone to talk to who will listen to you

if you use words like conduce I think you might have OCD.

I never heard of meds doing such a thing.

you are seeing a psychiatrist ? not a family doctor ?

in some rare occasions, yes. consult your doctor
