How does Bipolar Disorder affect the Body?

It's for a science project. So does anyone know how Bipolar Disorder may affect the body? I know it has something to do with the brain but does it actually do any damage? Does the disorder itself cause damage directly??

I have known a few people in my lifetime with Bi Polar disorder and it is mostly a mental condition that needs treatment.
I can only describe it from being an outsider looking in as; the highest highs and the lowest lows as far as how I've heard others describe their feelings.
I do not believe the actual condition causes damage to the body but you may ask about any medications you are given. If they put you on Lithium, that is something your brain produces naturally and you may not have enough of it so that is only a natural replacement more than a drug.
Stress can cause illness to your body or internal organs so please do try to keep stress at bay as much as possible. I know negative and depressing thoughts can come but you have to let it go knowing that stress alone with any condition or not can cause illness.
I have a chronic pain disease and between the medications I take and stress I have had, I'm now having problems that I know stress was half of the cause so please try as hard as possible to let the things slide instead of worrying too much.
I know that is so much easier said than done but I have finally begun to be able to just let go and it helps. You have to think; what will be will be.

Yes, when someone has bipolar their mood goes from excited to miserable. Some dont realize anything that is going on. They dont understand they are sick. When they are sad they can hurt themselves. they can commit suicide. anything can happen.

No. it's not a physical disease, just a mental condition.
