Can you start taking birth control pills before beginning your period?

I bought 3 months worth of birth control pills and am still waiting to begin my period. I am not pregnant, that is for sure. I am just very irregular. The pills expire in May, so I want to be able to take them before they go bad, in order to get my money worth. Can anything bad happen if I begin taking my pills before my period begins? Or do you think I'll be okay?
