When are you supposed to start taking birth control pills after having your baby?

When are you supposed to start taking birth control pills after having your baby?

When i left the hospital, they just kinda gave them to me and didnt tell me when to begin taking them

Before you begin having sex again. Most docs tell you to wait until after your 6 week check up before sex, but if you don't plan to wait that long, then start them sooner.

Normally, you would discuss this with your doctor at your 6 week postpartum visit. If you are breast feeding, you shouldn't be taking the regular pill - only the mini pill. Since doctor's usually tell you no sex until your six week visit, that's why they usually discuss it then. However, if you aren't breastfeeding, and are wanting to have sex sooner than this appointment, start the pill now.

The hospital gave you pills? That's very strange.

If you are breastfeeding, you cannot take regular pills: they will dry up your milk. You need another method of birth control when you begin having sex again. (LAM, condoms, the mini-pill, IUD, etc.)

If you are NOT breastfeeding, you still aren't really supposed to have sex again until your 6 week check-up, and at that time the doctor will discuss your birth control options.

if your not breastfeeding I would say start the first sunday after your next period (so if you get your period on a sunday start that day, if you start your period on a thursday start the pill that coming sunday), but if you are breastfeeding I would talk to your doctor.

Call your OB. You're not "supposed" to be taking them at all, they're purely voluntary, obviously. I never took them.

That's interesting that they gave them to you. Since you are supposed to wait 6 weeks to have sex, wait until then to start the birth control.

Soon after having the baby. Wait for you period and then begin.

I started birth control right after my 6 week check up visit.
