How does whole blood donation compare to plasma donation in terms of benefits to society?

When I say "benefits to society", I'm speaking along the lines of how much "good" comes out of it (i.e. how much and/or how many people are helped).

I figure there are at least two ways of looking at this question, and any way of answering would be great.

1) How does 1 donation of whole blood compare to 1 donation of plasma?

-or-

2) How does 1 donation of whole blood compare to the 16 donations of plasma a person could do in the same time period? (Since whole blood donation is limited to once per 8 weeks, whereas plasma can be donated twice per week.)

Thanks for any information!

It's hard to compare the value of blood to plasma since both have equal benefits to society. However blood expires much faster than plasma making blood a much needed product since the donation time is limited.

If you compare that one unit of whole blood can only go to one person where as 16 units of plasma could potentially go to 16 individuals so if you consider the number of people you could help then plasma seems to have more benefit to society.

Interesting question.
