How can a blood transfusion help in sports performance?

How can a blood transfusion help in sports performance?

Some atheletes, like the bike riders that do Tour De France, use blood enhancers. They inject things like Procrit, which helps the body produce more red blood cells, therefore can carry more oxygen to the brain and other parts of the body. It is a legal drug that is used in patients for many things, mostly cancer patients that are taking chemo. The drugs in chemo can destroy red blood cells, and procrit helps the body to make more. Like I said, it is a legal drug, but using it to enhance blood for competition is cheating and is not legal for this use....

Adding extra red blood cells allows the circulatory system to carry more oxygen to the muscles, so it more or less increases aerobic capacity. Adding extra RBCs also thickens the blood and creates a medical risk similar to polycythemia.

The more blood in your system, the more oxygen gets to your muscles since that is a major job of blood.

It won't. It would be a pure placebo effect.

Are you on your way to China???
