I need help finding the disadvantages of blood transfusions?

i need help for a school project, thanks for the help

there are now many options/types of blood transfusion, including blood taken from the patient themselves, earlier [autologous transfusion]. each has its own advantages & disadvantages. you can see a brief tabular summary here -- http://www.aap.org/publiced/BR_BloodTran...

in general, though, these are the main disadvantages or risks :
- fear of transmission of diseases like HIV, hepatitis, etc. through contaminated blood. can lead to complications & even death.
- allergic or immune reaction - this may be immediate or even delayed
- incompatibility between donor & recipient blood - hence blood types, Rhesus factor, etc. must be properly tested & matched.
- fever, chills, ague, etc. due to WBCs & RBCs transfusing together or rarely due to bacterial contamination.
- hemolysis - when haemoglobin is released into the blood stream. can affect kidneys.
- Collection, transportation [if any] & storage of blood, screening of donors, are also issues that can affect quality & life of blood.

www.scribd.com/doc/6586801/Blood-Trans... -- check this out. it lists the disadvantages but i couldn't get through for some reason.

hope these get you started
all the best

The risks of transfusion include allergic reaction, transfusion related lung injury, infection (this is pretty rare as the screening process is very good in developed countries).
Blood transfusion is not something to take lightly. Many clinicians are now being very conservative with transfusion as it doesn't usually help unless the patient is actively losing blood or the hemoglobin is less than 7. Most transfused blood has been sitting around for several weeks and studies have shown that these blood cells don't work properly and may not be beneficial.

well if your boyfriend is Edward Cullen then it would make you "smell all wrong for a while"

hahaha lol. i would most likely say the biggest one would be the dehydration afterwards
