If you had a blood transfusion, why cant you donate blood?

Something my Dad asked.

If you've had a transfusion you could have any disease that the donor(s) had, and without all their medical histories as well as your own the risks cannot be judged.

If you think that's bad, the USA bars donations from people who've lived in Britain for too long, because of Mad Cow Disease.聽 They even do this if the would-be donor is vegetarian!

If you've had a recent transfusion you can't donate as your body needs time to build up it's iron reserves etc again.

You can donate after a blood transfusion if it was a while ago as long as you didn't have any problems with the transfusion (some people have a reaction to having a transfusion).

You also wouldn't be able to donate blood if you received an infected transfusion (ie in the 1980's before HIV transmission was fully understood some people were unfortunately given a transfusion which contained HIV)

This can't happen now due to the advances in the screening of all blood products prior to transfusion.

Eventually, you still can donate if you had a transfusion in the past. If the transfusion was recent, it's best to wait; obviously you don't have much to spare!!!
