Does breast augmentation surgery need to be repeated multiple times throughout one's life?

This is humiliating, but here I go...

I am 18.5 years old and have virtually no breasts. I've done some research on the Internet and found a condition called "breast hypoplasia" that seems to describe my problem - abnormal underdevelopment of breast tissue. I can't fit into a size 'A' bra and have the same development of roughly a 12- or 13-year-old (I can assure you that I am not exaggerating). I have never had a boyfriend, and because of my problem, the thought of intimacy is terrifying. Not a day goes by when I don't experience an aweful sense of inadequacy along with worry about my future.

I told my doctor about my physiological condition, and she ran hormone blood tests, but they all came back optimal. I have a larger lower side (I'm pear-shaped) and can't help but feel disgustingly disproportionate. I have friends who look like walking toothpicks, and even they can fill an 'A' cup. My sister and mother are both 'B's, which is the size I would like to aim for; I don't want to be 'big,' I just want to be normal.

If I were to have breast augmentation surgery, would it be a one-time deal, or would I have to go back various times throughout my life and get them re-done? At what age am I old enough to have this surgery performed?

Ok, you are old enough to get the surgery. Most doctors will find your case acceptable and will go ahead with the surgery. But, they will recommend saline implants, because if you lack breast tissue silicone will not form correctly, and you will look really fake, not normal. Sometimes if something goes wrong with the implant, they will have to do surgery to repair. When you get older, you may "sag" just like if they were real, and they might have to re-do the implant sizes and lift them. I know that saline implants are very safe. The look and feel real and if something happens, the saline will not harm your body. Find a board certified plastic surgeon though. One with a lot of credentials and has done it for at least 10 years. The higher qualified doctor will return the best results. Good luck!!

You may need more surgery down the road, either to replace the implants or to remove them altogether. In clinical trials studying the safety and effectiveness of saline-filled breast implants, as many as one in four women required a second operation within five years of the initial surgery.

Some of the potential risks are:

Rupture:
causing fluid to leak into your breast and surrounding tissue. This can happen as a result of a blunt-force injury 鈥?if you're thrown against the steering wheel in a car accident, for example 鈥?or from tiny cracks in the implant shell that can occur over time.

Capsular Contracture:
Fibrous scar tissue forms a capsule around your breast implant. The scar tissue may build up over time and constrict your implant 鈥?a painful and potentially disfiguring condition.

Infection:
One potential complication of breast augmentation surgery is infection. Medications may help, but antibiotics aren't always successful in treating infections of this type. Removing your breast implants may be necessary if you develop a severe infection
Hematoma. Blood and other fluids can pool around the implant, causing pain, infection or other problems.

Your Future:
Mammograms may be more complicated.
Over time, Saline filled implants will need to be adjusted or replaced

Discuss these issues with your Doctor to better understand if implants are the right option for you.

I know it's difficult for me (a guy) to get what you're going through. But just be sure that all your fears and anxieties really ARE to do with your breasts...I mean, you can't have a surgical procedure and expect all your problems to go away if they are deep and emotional.

Also, don't assume you'll never find a boyfriend the way you are.
