Breast reconstruction.Implants arter radation, silicon or saline? |
I would like to hear from women who have had mastecomy's and reconstruction done. Is it possible to have an implant after radation? Would you suggest saline or silicon? Did your insurance company pay for the other breast to have an implant to match. Would you have a tramflap? why or why not It is possible for some patients to get implants after radiation but not all, you need to be evaluated ( go get a consult ) by a plastic surgeon ( at least 3 opinions...) If you can get implants opt for saline spacers ( they will have a port left outside the breast so the doctor can gradually fill them with more saline allowing the skin to stretch ) then once you have gotten to the final size, get silicone because you have had mastectomy you have no breast tissue to cover the implant so you want silicone under the chest muscle for the best appearance with saline you will have a lot of strange rippling... Also look at DEET flaps too, not just TRAM flaps... It all depends on how much fat you have on your belly or buttoucks to take from...My heart is with you, best of luck. Remeber do a lot of research online and the go to a few if not several differnet plastic surgeons for consults and ask for pictures of their actual patients... You can also often ask if there are any former pt's who would be willing to talk with you on the phone, they can be a wonderful support and give you a better idea of what to expect i had a tram flap, breast reconstruction. they took a chunk of fat from my stomach and stuck it to my chest, where a breast was removed. sounded like the answer my prayers - quickie tummy tuck and extra breast at the same time, but it didn't pan out that way. 6 incredibly painful operations later, and months of being laid-up in bed on pain killers, the flap didn't take. moral of my story is, don't allow the doctor to just give you a yada, yada, win some-loose some answer when you ask about possible side effects and problems that could stand for each scenario. i unfortunately counted on the prestigious reputation of the hospital my plastic surgeon was working at and he's a complete BUFFOON! argh! should i have known what could have happened, i never would have opted for the tram flap. now i have a scar on my leg that goes from my knee, all the way to my ankle, plus a rectangular chunk of skin that had to get removed from my upper leg. no swimsuits for me, yahoo! make sure you research the heck out of this one just to make absolutely sure you'll have no regrets. I had a silicon implant reconstruction. My plastic surgeon recommended it and after looking at pictures I felt it looked more natural (I only had 1 side so I wanted to be as symmetrical as possible). I had a lift and reduction done on the other breast. In Illinois insurance companies by law have to pay for any work done to the other breast to make things symmetrical. Tramflap wasn't a good option for me because I had larger breasts. been there, done that |
