What are chances of cervical cancer if you have HPV?

my 23yo best friend just found out she has HPV and they also found abnormal cells. They are going to run test to see if she has cervical cancer or not. What are the chances of this being cancer?

Please do not listen to these other people! The chance of someone with HPV getting cancer is like the chance of someone who drives a car being killed in a car accident.

Most people drive cars, and most of us don't die in car crashes. Most people have HPV, and very few people die of cervical cancer. If you have regular pap smears, you reduce your risk of cervical cancer by 99%.

If you test people in their early 20s for HPV, something like 40-50% will test postive. The FDA doesn't even recommend HPV testing until age 30, simply because testing younger women causes panic for a large group who's infections will mostly just go away on their own.

The chance of finding cancer after an abnormal pap smear is ridculously low, like 0.01%. And since your friend is only 23, the chance for her to have cervical cancer is probably much smaller than that.

They are not running tests to see if she has cervical cancer. They are running test to see how far her abnormal cells have progressed. If it is only mild dysplasia (also called CIN 1) it has a really good chance of going away on its own, so they will just watch her closely.

If it's moderate dysplasia (CIN 2), in someone of her age, the doctors usually would give the option of removing the lesion or just watching it closely to see if it gets better or worse.

If it's severe dysplasia (CIN 3), doctors will recommend having the bad cells removed by a simple procedure called a LEEP. It's done in the doctor's office. CIN 3 is also known as carcinoma in situ, and it's one step away from cancer. Still, it's a pretty big step. CIN 3 has less than a 25% chance of becoming cancer ever. And usually it takes about 10 years to become cancer. If treated, the chance of CIN 3 becoming cancer is near zero.

Just make sure she goes to her follow ups and she will be fine.

It depends upon the type of HPV which caused genital warts. HPV types 16, 18, 31 and 45 cause cervical cancer.
A new vaccine to prevent cervical cancer is now available. In June 2006, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the vaccine called Gardasil, which prevents infection against the two types of HPV responsible for the majority of cervical cancer cases. Studies have shown that the vaccine appears to prevent early-stage cervical cancer and precancerous lesions. Gardasil is the first approved vaccine targeted specifically to prevent any type of cancer.
You may receive Gardasil even if you have already had genital warts, or had a positive HPV test or abnormal pap smear in the past. However, Gardasil will not treat active genital warts or HPV-related cancers, and it will not cure HPV infection. You may feel faint after receiving this vaccine, especially within the first 15 minutes after injection.

HPV of the seen so many type of HPV only type 6and 8 are responsible for cervical cancer -----all that glitters is not gold

if any woman has HPV the chances of having cervical cancer is obviously higher. All u can do is pray that she doesnt have it.

The chances are good

I agree with Lily L and I have had HPV for over 20 years. The BEST defense is regular Paps.
